AC Transit changes its bus fare payment system on Saturday Jan. 1 when it stops accepting multi-ride paper tickets as payment to board buses. As it takes another step to boost use of Clipper smart cards for paying fares, AC Transit has set Friday as the last day to pay with the 10-ride and 31-ride paper tickets for adults and the 10-day paper tickets for youths, seniors and the disabled.

Some AC Transit bus riders plan to march to the transit system’s board meeting tonight in downtown Oakland to demand a moratorium on further service cuts. AC Transit is giving away free rides this month to everyone who boards a “holiday” bus that is rotated around to serve a different route each day. AC makes it a seasonal practice to decorate one bus, cover the fare box, and waive the $2 bus fare.

The federal government proposes a rule to reduce the accidental deaths of two children a week on average from car backovers. The rule would require back-up cameras on new cars and trucks, effective in 2014.
