Should AC Transit’s youth pass go way up? Hearing tomorrow

AC Transit hosts a public hearing tomorrow for riders to weigh in raising bus fares and adopting standards to govern all fare decisions for years to come. Among the stickiest issue is whether to raise the youth pass from $15 to $20 a month in August, and later increase it to $45 a month over eight years.

The hearing will be from 4 p.m. to at least 6 p.m. Wednesday (April 27) at AC Transit headquarters, 1600 Franklin St, Oakland.

AC Transit last raised fares in July, 2009. Administrators at the financially struggling bus system say they have proposed a series of principles to provide more regular and consistent fare increases. Among the proposals is to set monthly discount passes at 36 times the base cash fare for each category: youth, adult and senior/disabled.

AC Transit staffers say they will listen to the testimony at the public hearing, and then decide later whether to present an amended proposal to the board May 11 or May 25. Any fare increase likely would go into effect in August, officials said.
