A family-oriented train celebration for National Train Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Amtrak station, 601 Marina Vista Ave., Martinez . Vendors will give children train-related key chains, pencils, and paper hats, and a model train display will be set up.

There will be no free train rides for kids. However, through May 22, adults can get a 25 percent discount on Amtrak tickets in California on the Capital Corridor, San Joaquin, and Pacific Surfliner routes.  Tickets must be booked in advance to get the discount. Give discount code  H864 when booking.

Up to two children per family can ride Amtrak for half price  – a regular discount that will continue, Amtrak officials said.

Amtrak, Caltrans, Capital Corridor and the city of Martinez are jointly celebrating National Train Day to recognize the importance of rail travel and the history of the “golden spike” driven in 1869 in Promontory Summit, Utah to complete the first transcontinental railroad.
