What do BART and men and women bicyclists in skirts have in common? They’re partners tonight in a Berkeley doubleheader of the practical and the wacky. Cyclists are invited  from 7:30 to 8 p.m. tonight to an open house at the new bike station at the Ashby BART station.  Afterwards, cyclists are invited to head out for a “skirt” ride around Berkeley in the monthly social ride sponsored by the East Bay Bicycle Coalition.

As for the bike station, it’s a self-serve area with electronic bike lockers that BART users can use to stash their bikes while riding trains. The station has secure places to store 128 bicycles in lockers that can be accessed with a BikeLink smart card, according to BART. During the open house, a few passes for free BART travel will be given away, and a flat fixing contest will be held.

As for the men and women in skirts on bikes, “skirts” is the theme of the bicycle coalition’s monthly leisure and social ride.  Click here for the route. Kilts are acceptable attire – in case you wondered.

“You can flirt in your skirt. Be curt in your skirt,” says a notice by the East Bay Bicycle Coalition. ” Wear a shirt with your skirt. Though you might get dirt in your skirt, don’t get hurt in your skirt! ” Okay, you get the idea.
