Centerville Supermarket blues

By Matt Artz

Another developer, another failed effort to get a supermarket in the vacant 6.6 acre lot near the Centerville train station.

After local developer James Tong struck out twice in his effort to get the redevelopment project off the ground, the council turned to developer Blake Hunt Ventures.

Well Blake Hunt struck out too. Now instead of an all-retail project, the firm is proposing a mix of retail and residential on the site bounded by Fremont Boulevard, Post Street, Bonde Way and Thornton Avenue.

The council rejected similar plans last year. Council members decide on the new proposal at their meeting Tuesday night.

  1. Bill Spicer Says:

The developer Blake Hunt was counting on Tesco’s “Fresh and Easy” British super market to locate at the Centerville Location.
I was told by some one in the Newark Planning group that the Store “Fresh and Easy” is now locating at Mowry and Paseo Padre shopping Center.
This Centerville development really drives home the City of Fremont Redevelopments Commitee’s skills at
    redevelopment, NOT.
These are the same politicians who want to get re-elected?

  2. Glenn Gutierrez Says:

Hey, that’s better news than Tesco’s January 30 press release which made it look like the final 18 sites had left Fremont high and dry.

It is curious, though. What exactly has dissuaded Ralph’s, Whole Foods, Tesco, etc. from moving into Fremont? I really wish Nugget Markets would spread this far, but I’d hate to see them skip over Fremont as well.

makes you wonder how shady our politicians really are
