Fremont disqualified from best walking city competition

Fremont may be big enough for the Oakland A’s, but it is suddenly too small to register on the radar of Prevention Magazine. In 2006, the wellness rag helped put Fremont on the map by naming it the ninth best walking city in America. San Francisco finished 34th. Fremont was still good enough to crack the top 20 in 2007.

Not this year. Perhaps looking to avoid collective head-shaking on a grand scale, Prevention limited the competition to the 10 most populous cities in each state. San Francisco finished 6th in the country, and Fremont was too small to matter.

If it’s any consolation, Fremont, Neb. tied for first in its state.

For those who care about these rankings, take heed: Fremont is still battling SF for title of brainiest city and best city for men’s health. They’d also be competitors if a title existed for most exasperating city in which to make a left turn.

Thanks to the present Mayor and City Council, we have already lost the status of “America’s City” for a long time. Hold on and wait till Fremont becomes a large city with the ever expanding strategy of large-scale high density developments without consideration for services to the existing Fremont residents. The present City Officials give lame excuses like the State law mandating housing developments everywhere. When Fremont becomes a large city with a large-city problems like crime, gang-activity etc, you can blame Mr.Wasserman, Mr.Cho, Ms. Anu, Mr. Weikowski, Mr Harrison, Fred Diaz etc

It is best not to attempt to walk across six-eight lane thoroughfares anyway, especially in Pacific Commons.
Regarding left turns in Fremont – When traversing our city’s streets I follow the policy UPS instituted a number of years ago. A study found their drivers could save a substantial amount of time by making right turns whenever possible to reach their destination. This eliminates having to wait for left turn arrows, which in Fremont, you are never sure are going to occur before or after the straight ahead green.
