Six new residents a day seems like a lot, but I guess it isn’t.

California Department of Finance released figures May 1 that show statewide population increases over the last year.

Fremont had one of the smallest population growths in Alameda County last year, showing just a 1.11 percent gain from Jan. 1, 2007.

On that day, the city’s population was estimated at 211,162. By Jan. 1, 2008, the state reported the population had increased to 213,512, a difference of 2,350. Fremont gained about six new residents a day during the growth period.

In comparison, the city of Dublin experienced the largest population increase for an Alameda County city, at 7.67 percent. Berkeley had the smallest growth at just .55 percent.

Alameda County overall experienced a 1.34 percent increase, with a population of 1,543,000. In 2006, the county’s population was reported at 1,522,597.

California on the whole had a 1.3 percent population increase, with 38,049,462 residents this year. The state had 37,559,440 residents in 2007.
