Fremont, Union City, Newark school rankings

UPDATE: Our schools reporter tells me that the rankings released today don’t mean jack. I’m too simple to understand this stuff, but she’ll explain it in her story in tomorrow’s paper.

  1. I checked the API’s in Fremont. Mattos only jumped 17 pts while Grimmer jumped 28 pts.

  2. I should clarify a couple of points.

    First, it’s not that this week’s API report “mean[s] jack,” to use my fellow reporter’s words when he wrote this blog entry.

    Readers should be aware, though, that the scores released Wednesday are the same figures that came out last August, more or less. The scores for some schools changed because the state went back and recalculated the results using a different formula. But the data from which the scores were derived were the same as before. That’s why, from the perspective of testing experts, the latest base scores aren’t “new news,” and they tend not to get as excited over the spring API report as the one that comes out each summer. (The summer report is the one that will show the year-to-year change in school scores.)

    What was new in Wednesday’s report were the school rankings, which weren’t released last summer.

    Now, for clarification No. 2…

    Rebecca (read above comment) is right: Grimmer improved 28 points and Mattos went up 17 points if you compare their ’07 to their ’06 scores.

    However, in my article, I was comparing the ’07 scores that were released last August to the revised ’07 scores that came out this week. In that instance, Mattos’ score shot up 35 points.

    So why did the scores change? Last summer, the state calculated a school’s score based on the test results of all students. This week, it decided not to factor in the scores of special ed students before coming up with an overall score for the schools.

    Hopefully this clears up any confusion.

  3. So, to rehash what may be an “old” subject… If we have STAR testing leading to an API which measures academic performance, and we have teacher-based grades on a quarterly basis, which also measures academic performance, then why in the world do we need a high school exit exam?
