Former Navlet’s site has a new name

The development planned for the old Navlet’s site in Warm Springs will be called, “Fremont Times Square,” according to the city’s event calendar. The ground-breaking is scheduled for Sept. 9.

Considering that it’s going to be an Asian-themed shopping center, I would have gone with “Fremont Tiananmen Square,” but maybe it’s safer to go with a name associated with peep shows and fake ID pushers over one associated with tanks mowing over people.

Guess it’s better than Fremont Square Times, although I have heard that comment from some. Know it won’t be as large as either place you mentioned.

  2. Groove Says:

This retail development is shameful waste of space. And I was of that opinion before I heard about the stupid name.

  3. Coyote Bill Says:

You can thank the present planning Commisson and the Present City Council for another strip Mall.
We deserve a city council that works for the residents of Fremont, not Developers or Real Estate Speculaters

No Coyote Bill…. neither the Planning Commission or the City council had a say in this. The Navlets site was zoned for this type of development and it was never brought before either body. We had no say. I liked Navlets very much…and wish they were still in business. But…the property owner made this decision and cut the deal. It was never reviewed by either of those you mention is responsible. Sorry… the responsibility is that of the former property owner and the buyer. I am sure Matt Artz can verify this.

Dirk’s revelation about the Navlets property is a two-sided coin. Those in favor of property owners being allowed to develop as they wish, based on zoning, will be in agreement. Those that yearn for a more planned, orderly and smart development within our city limits will see this as a very unfortunate loophole to property sales in the future. And, depressing.

    Doug,
I agree. It is frustrating to see the lowering of the quality of life in Fremont.
If the city council and the planning commision is not accountable, who is?
