Fremont school board member Ivy Wu has announced that she will seek re-election after all.
For months, the board president has been noncommittal, saying her decision would rest largely on her health. (Wu was diagnosed in 2007 with breast cancer, which is in remission now.)
This week, when the results of her latest physical came in, Wu was given a clean bill of health. So she announced her candidacy in an e-mail late Tuesday night. The content of that e-mail is below:
Dear Friends,
Many of you have been asking me if I will be running
for re-election to the Fremont Unified School Board in
November. I am sorry that I wasn’t able to give you an
answer sooner. The purpose of this email is to let you
know that I did receive a call from my doctor’s office
yesterday regarding my mammogram result, and by the grace
of God, I am in stable condition. Therefore, I will be
pulling the paper before Friday and running for re-election.

As many of you know, I had a very steep learning curve
to overcome when I first joined the FUSD Board in
2004, because I had no experience or background at all with the K-12
public school education system. These past 3+ years
have been very challenging, but highly rewarding,
because I’ve been given the opportunities to learn so
much, meet so many people, participate in various
meetings and events where I get to contribute my
experience and understanding to make positive changes
for the good of our students, schools, families, and
also community.

With all the challenges ahead - proposed budget
cuts, personnel changes, No Child Left Behind Act,
student housing problems, safe school concerns, etc.
my continuing service on the Board should ensure
stability and progress of our School District. Many of you have been encouraging me to run again. I
truly thank you for your trust and confidence in me, and I look
forward to your support as I embark on the 2008
campaign.
