Larry Montgomery

By Matt Artz
Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 at 7:00 pm in City Council Election.

Click here for my profile of City Council candidate Larry Montgomery. He’s an interesting guy. A lot of candidates tend to be either establishment or anti-establishment. For lack of a better term, Montgomery is un-establishment. He’s not part of any political clique, but he doesn’t have any anti-clique bitterness that often comes from losing races or political battles.

Thanks to Matt Artz for posting Larry Montgomery’s profile.

He looks like the ideal candidate if you look past the establishment ones like Suzanne Chan. Bob Wieckoswki, Trisha etc. He has the right vision and thinking for Fremont’s future.

IT IS TIME FOR FREMONT RESIDENTS TO GIVE A CHANCE TO NEW PEOPLE WHEN 2008 IS THE YEAR OF CHANGE AND HOPE

  2. Jon Simon Says:

Change for change’s sake ends badly. Jessie Ventura, anyone? Does Mr. Montgomery know of the many failed, city-wide, “free” wireless networks? You can’t wave your hand and have fancy restaurants run to town. Happy thoughts don’t come close to reality.

I’m not playing games of chance with my city, especially when the chances are low.

  3. Current Ohlone Student Says:

I love the fact that he supports banning plastic foam cups, but most of all that he’s not apart of any political clique! His vision for city free wireless networks and his support for the A’s ballpark including a convention center are out of touch with what this city wants/needs.

    Lets vote realistically.

Any details on his campaign as to who has endorsed/supports him so far?

  4. Doug Says:

Mr. Montgomery says,”…the city needs to focus more on its historic districts”. It seems like the city’s focus on the districts, i.e., Centerville Project, Niles Town Plaza and Irvington’s Bay Street redevelopment have been going on forever.

How many historic districts does one city need? Sacramento, Los Gatos and Pleasanton immediately come to mind, with being satisfied with one “Old Town”. Fremont seems to have at least three districts vying for the title.

How much redevelopment money has already been expended on district-centric projects, while our city has no center? Or maybe the idea is Pacific Commons and the Ballpark Village will be the center. I, for one, certainly hope not.

  5. WarbleFly Says:

I will have to hear more about him. That said, I find myself in near agreement with Ohlone Student with one notable exception. That Larry Montgomery is in touch with what “this city needs/wants” and that is the A’s ballpark village!

I too, like the idea of banning styrofoam cups, lets add the plastic grocery bags to the list too.
And as a northern post of Silicon Valley, we should have had free city wide wireless in place years ago!

Has candidate Larry Montgomery set up a website yet?

  6. WarbleFly Says:

I have one purpose on this message board, to promote the A’s ballpark at all costs, irrespective of the consequence to the residents of Fremont.

  10. Larry Montgomery Says:

I would like to thank everyone for their comments. The one from Doug is true. The redevelopment projects throughout the city have been going on a long time. I am very familiar with construction projects since that is my background. I can promise you that I if I am elected I will hold everyone associated with these projects accountable. We will set deadlines and the contractors will meet them or they will be replaced. That’s the way it works in the private sector and That’s the way it will work if I am envolved.
As far as the city wide wireless network goes it will work. I promise that if we get it approved it will be good for Fremont. Those fly by night wireless companies that failed in places like the city of Concord were bad news. I have been in contact with Cisco Systems and their system works.

  11. WarbleFly Says:

    FREMONT is 100% A’s BASEBALL!!!

There will be a decrease in crime. There will be an increase in badly needed public transportation! There will be world class entertainment option in our town! There will be in an increase in quality of life.

    “Anecdote-filled rationalizations” be damned!

  12. WarbleFly Says:

  14. Lois Says:

NO to the A’s in Fremont!!!
NO to the A’s in Fremont!!!

Bringing the A’s to Fremont will mean a loss of a quality life.

NO to the A’s in Fremont!!!
NO to the A’s in Fremont!!!

  15. Larry Montgomery Says:

    Lois,
I can assure you that the A’s coming to Fremont will not affect our quality of life. The city will benefit from the added revenue dollars, I promise. Give it a chance and vote for me as your city council member.

  16. worble Says:

LET THE PEOPLE VOTE ON THIS PROJECT. NO TO THE BALLPARK IN FREMONT!!!!!!!

  17. Lois Says:

    Dear Mr. Montgomery,

I don’t want an Oakland, or Los Angeles. I heard many years ago, when we moved here, that Fremont would become, because of size, another Los Angeles. I don’t want it.

Fremont has grown too much, too fast…in people stackables, these low income housing stackables. I feel for the people, but with this growth, comes more congestion, more crime, needs for about everything, the costs that go along with this growth. I’m against it..I don’t like being taxed to death, and this growth will tax us to death.

We’ve more than filled the quota for low income housing. Fremont is being destroyed before our eyes.

    Do you have a website?

  18. Jean Says:

I agree with Lois, we don’t want to get stuck paying for the stadium, in more ways than just money. If the police can’t respond to our alarms, what are they going to do about all the crime the stadiums brin

  19. Jon Simon Says:

Just a theory here: People who are upset about no police response to alarms also feel safer with increased airport security and think the hassle is worth it. People who are not upset about the alarms are bothered by the intrusiveness at airports and don’t think it’s worth it. Are you one side or a mix of both?

  20. SuperDuper Says:

    Jon -

Let’s try to get some consensus here -

    1. Most kinds of “insurance” that I know of cannot be rationalized on a cost/benefit basis. . . . in other words, if you polled 1000 people and asked them what tangible benefit they received in return for their “insurance” payments - 999 would say “nothing” - and only 1 would say they had an economic advantage. That 1 would be the one that had a “claim” against the insurance - or, in the case of residential alarms - it would be the 1 that had a real break-in. That said - we all buy insurance because (the law requires most of us to do so) but, more importantly - because the downside risk of not doing so, for those poor and few individuals who WILL have to use the service - is far too great to go without.

    2. Our city fathers have stated that alarm response have been cancelled because the costs of continuing to respond are high, and the rate of “real” alarms is so small.

    3. IF the economics of this situation are TRULY the reason for eliminating this service, the economics COULD BE CHANGED - IF, that’s truly what you wanted to do. . As so many other communities have already done - Fremont COULD charge more for a “false alarm” response - the fee structure COULD cover the cost of response. But, for whatever reasons, Fremont has elected not to do so.

Let’s start another thread elsewhere regarding the effectiveness of the TSA security screening versus the inconvenience to passengers. Matt Artz - can you pass this suggestion on to someone - maybe we can get another Blog going on this topic - - - -

To respond to Jon’s question -

Because of the relatively low rate of “claims” - residential alarm response don’t make me *feel* any safer . . . . just like my car insurance doesn’t make me feel any safer . . . . . just like TSA doesn’t make me feel any safer . . . . . . the question isn’t does it make ME feel any safer - the question is, does the idiot that is considering breaking into my house, or putting 1000 matchstick heads in his Nike’s feel any safer ????? I’m betting you wont get an answer to those two questions in this venue.
