The Fremont Bulletin, a sister paper to The Argus, had a story about Fremont police wanting closed campuses to help deal with gang issues at schools. Click here to read it.
I wanted to go to this meeting on Monday, but I wasn’t able to get out of the office in time.

As someone who graduated from a Fremont high school about 3 years ago, I’m not too sure closing campuses will do much to target the growing gang problem. It seems like a reactive approach.
Students plan fights off campus during lunch, so people logically conclude that if campuses were closed, there would be less violence. However, we would then see even MORE fights on school premises, threatening the safety of innocent students. Gang fights are particularly dangerous because the students usually carry weapons.
While I’m not sure what the solution to all of this should be, I don’t think it’s a good idea for the rest of the student population to reguarly see knives being brandished in a place they’re supposed to feel safe.

Many businesses rely on students coming in at lunch. Kids also need some freedom in their lives. Make it a privilege for those with good grades!
