The not so great Fremont blackout of 2008

A broken circuit breaker in a PG&E substation cut off power to 23,400 Fremont customers Saturday night, the utility company said.

The outage started at 7:45. Power was restored to some customers beginning at 9:20 p.m. Full power was restored by 10 p.m.

The outage wasn’t rain related.

PG&E described the affected area as Central Fremont/Newark. A former Argus intern took the the streets after the lights went out. He said there was no power around Chadbourne Drive, Ohlone College, Pine Street and the vicinity of Carol & Fremont Blvd.

  1. This was the second power outage we experienced in our neighborhood in just a little over a week. The first occurred on October 30.

Coincidentally, the power that evening went off at 7:45, but wasn’t fully restored until 6:30 the next morning.

It had rained the previous day.

  2. Power was back on that same night at about 9:20PM (ish) near High Street and Grimmer. There were small “islands” of power throughout. Washington Blvd near Highway 680 for example.
