Barack Obama didn’t appoint Newark Mayor Dave Smith to a team of 24 big city mayors. Mayor Manny Diaz of Miami appointed him. And like Gus Morrison wrote, Smith is very active in the Conference of U.S. Mayors, which is probably why he got the appointment.
The group will lobby the Obama administration to give money the country doesn’t have directly to cities for public works projects as opposed to giving it to the states.
This March will mark Smith’s 31st year as mayor of Newark. For 27 of those years he worked for Oatey, a manufacturer of plumbing supplies. The company recently laid off most of its Newark workers including Union Sanitary Board Member Tom Handley. He had been the plant manager.

The problem with Obama is that he believes that government is the “solution,” not the problem!

I have to say, a city with a part-time mayor who works at a plumbing supply company sounds like the complete opposite of a “big city”.
Anyway, congrats to Mr. Smith. He should take Obama to the All Star diner.

When hacking apart government oversight leads to a worldwide financial meltdown, big government is the only answer.

Walter, remember, we only have one president at a time and we still have 11 days left to bash Bush.
Question – Who do we turn to if not our federal* government? GM or maybe Lehman Bros.? How about Madoff for President?
Maybe you could expand upon your statement and offer us what your solution would entail.
*forget our state government. Obviously that no longer exists.
