FREMONT — Four Fremont schools were briefly placed under lockdown this morning as police sought an armed man wanted in connection with a November street robbery.

American High School, Thornton Junior High School and Oliveira and Cabrillo elementary schools were under lockdown for about 30 minutes. Police lifted the protective measure about 10:35 a.m. after they caught the suspect near a residence more than a half-mile away from the nearest school, authorities said. Nothing happened at the campuses.

Officers were conducting surveillance on a house on Theta Court in the Cabrillo neighborhood about 9:45 a.m. when they spotted a 19-year-old man whom they were seeking in connection with an armed robbery, Detective Bill Veteran said.

When the suspect saw one of the officers, he took off running, said Veteran, who is spokesman for the police department.

During the initial search, police recovered a hat that the suspect was wearing, as well as a loaded Glock .40-caliber pistol, Veteran said. The suspect’s name has not yet been released.

Police cordoned off parts of the Cabrillo neighborhood and ordered lockdowns at four neighborhood schools as a protective measure.

Details of the November robbery were not immediately clear, but Veteran said a man apparently robbed a person of a pair of diamond earrings, a cellular phone and a “gold grill.”

Judging by the items stolen, I guess it’s safe to say he didn’t rob an 80 year old granny.
