Pontiac is dead

What that means for NUMMI, I don’t know. It also makes the Toyota Corolla and Tacoma.

GM cutting 21,000 jobs and closing 13 plants. Four brands only going forward. Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC.

I’d eliminate the last two as well, Buick and GMC. A core/luxury brand structure has worked well for Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Infinity, Honda/Acura, etc.

I hear the Buick is the Mercedes of China as far as a status symbol. And rumors are abound on the financial blogs about Buick at the least staying around to exploit this market, or being sold to Chinese buyers(as the article states).

On a more local focus, I hope the location of NUMMI, specifically it’s proximity to the Oakland shipyard is a factor for Toyota, since I don’t expect any GM vehicles to be made at NUMMI after this year. I’m assuming though, that Corolla and Tacoma parts are largely imported.
