Cable problems?

I got a call from a Glenmoor woman. She said her cable stopped working for channels above 39. She said because of the digital switchover, Comcast is requiring customers to get conversion boxes and charging customers a fee to get the stations if they have more than one tv in the house.

Anyone else have this problem?

We had “Expanded Basic” service up to channel 76.

We got a series of letters from Comcast about the conversion. Comcast provided three free tuner boxes, no charge: two basic boxes, and one full-featured one. Now we have “Digital Starter” service with more channels for the same price.

Note, the Comcast digital conversion is different from the broadcast digital conversion.

This isn’t really news, unless somebody didn’t receive the letters, or didn’t act on them.

Well, I received several letters and a call from Comcast – they did a pretty good job of reaching out on this. I received my my FREE digital converter box, which was mailed directly to me, and installed it 2 months ago. I hate dealing with Comcast, but they did do a particularly good job on this one. The Glenmoor lady is just clueless – maybe she watches too much TV which degraded her reading skills?

John *cough* that last bit, um…

argumentum ad hominem consists of replying to an argument or factual claim by attacking or appealing to a characteristic or belief of the source making the argument or claim, rather than by addressing the substance of the argument or producing evidence against the claim.

John – thanks for the info. I, too, usually avoid Comcast like H1N1, but in this case they did OK. Since I was having some other (internet) work done at the house, they installed the converters on 2 of my TV’s for me and waived the $15 installation charge, although I had to ask if this was a possibility. Hey, it never hurts to ask.

FYI for anyone else who’s still operating with some last-generation electronics, I still have a VCR on one of my TV’s; the cable guy hooked it up to the converter box, but perhaps he didn’t know or just didn’t tell me that the VCR would not work with the converter box – when I scan for channels through the VCR it won’t pick up any channels. Guess it’s time for a DVR. Any chance Comcast owns stock in the DVR manufacturers?

Irvington, check out dtvpal. This may be your answer. No monthly fees.

The new DTVPal DVR digital-to-analog converter box is the first and only to offer digital video recording (DVR) and high-definition (HD) capabilities along with analog pass-through.

I fall into the Laggard category and use a rooftop antenna for my ATSC TV.

Irv said “I still have a VCR on one of my TV’s; the cable guy hooked it up to the converter box, but perhaps he didn’t know or just didn’t tell me that the VCR would not work with the converter box – when I scan for channels through the VCR it won’t pick up any channels.”

Does your VCR have an infrared emitter that can change channels on the converter box? Once upon a time, we had VCRs that could do that, but the more recent ones usually don’t.

We have a ReplayTV that can change the channels on the Comcast DCH70 box (but not the little Pace box). Series 2 Tivos can apparently change channels on the Pace box.

Our other recorders can still record the analog channels, which includes all the broadcast channels, without the converter box.

Or, you can hook the converter box to your VCR, but you can only record whichever channel the box is tuned to.

If you can find a recorder (or TV) with a “Clear QAM” tuner, then you can see all the unscrambled Comcast channels, which is pretty much all the Digital Starter channels. But the channel numbers are all different.
