UPDATE: Ellen Corbett is introducing similar legislation in the Senate. Torrico’s spokesman never got back to me about whether this bill would screw Fremont out of its sales and use tax money, which is collected by the state. A Fremont offiicial said it wasn’t clear if the bill might deprive it of some of the money it is getting from NUMMI.
Assemblyman Alberto Torrico has introduced legislation that would exempt NUMMI from from paying state use and sales tax. His spokesman is pretty sure that Fremont would still be able to collect those taxes locally if the bill becomes law. He’ll get back to me to confirm that.
