More on MLB Committee

UPDATE: Our Oakland city reporter writes that his understanding is that the committee won’t offer its findings to Selig until the week of the 15th, and that the report won’t include a recommendation.

Fremont Mayor Bob Wasserman said MLB told city officials that Selig would be getting the A’s committee report during the second week of February, which jives with what Dellums reportedly said. Of course MLB had originally told Fremont that it would happen in January.

Wasserman said he does worry that baseball formed the committee to add legitimacy for moving the A’s to San Jose, but is still hopeful it will favor Fremont’s approach.

“I really think that we’ve got so much more to offer than anyone else, but these are terrible times,” the mayor said.

What he means, I think, is Fremont has a lot more potential for additional development, but that doesn’t hold the same appeal it would have before the economy tanked.

Wasserman said a major developer told the city than the NUMMI site “isn’t worth two cents,” right now, because no developer would take on such a gargantuan project in this market. So the property would have to be parceled out, which the city doesn’t want to do.

So now we know what MLB stands for, Major League Bulls***

Between Wolff, Selig and the whole lot there isn’t an ounce of honesty or creditability.

Oh wait, I know. FCN had something to do with this didn’t they?! FCN has influenced the MLB committee. They intimidated them into a state of indecision! We should have known!

  2. Marty Says:

I think the FCN had little to do with the eventual fate of the A’s

Ha Ha Ha it looks like Back Pocket Bob, Fred Duds and Nina Moremouth are going down. What a bunch of A’sses. Will they reimburse the city taxpayers for the money the blew? Hold them personally accountable. I smell a lawsuit.

  4. FremontA's Says:

Watch your mouth Skumar and stop being rude. Shame on you!!!! “Sindia”

  5. NoAsWS Says:

The A’s are just not interested in Fremont. It’s a bad location for them. The only incentive for Lew Wolff earlier was the housing component. When the housing market collapsed, the A’s just needed excuses to leave Fremont, and pursuit their first love, San Jose!

It’s very sad to see some business interest groups and politician want to bring the A’s to Fremont “at all cost”. To lure the A’s, Fremont will have to make too much financial sacrifices, which would be detrimental to our city.

  6. VOR Says:

Add this as another checkmark in San Jose’s column for a stadium location.

BART EXTENSION TO SAN JOSE DECLARED ELIGIBLE FOR FEDERAL FUNDING

The Federal Transit Administration included the BART project in its “new starts” program, in which transit agencies across the country compete for about $2 billion a year for new rail and bus lines, the Valley Transportation Authority confirmed Wednesday.
Federal funding would be the final piece in a complex financial puzzle, making it possible to bring the region’s most popular train line to the Bay Area’s biggest city. The state has committed $760 million for the effort, and Santa Clara County voters have approved two sales taxes to pay for building and operating the trains.

  7. Skumar Says:

No No No!!!!! “I want A’s leave freakmont”. I want Fremont to be a bedroom community. Let’s elect Gus Morrison, Vinnie Bacon, mystery candidate, and others who are anti- growth and anti-stadium. New City management!!!! “NO CHANGE FOR FREMONT!!!!”

  8. Marty Says:

VOR, that’s contingent on a ballpark being built at the “Diridon site” south of the Diridon station and the shark tank (link below). I think it would be optimistic for Wolff to believe he has that location in the bag. The SJ RDA thinks this land is the most valuable metro square mile in Northern California, and maybe they’re right — Caltrain, Bart and high speed rail will all stop at Diridon.

Regardless, SJ Bart is at least 10 years out. The A’s want to be playing in their new digs April, 2014.

FremontA’s- what are your distinguished thoughts on all this? It is not looking good for and A’s stadium in Fremont now.

  10. joe Says:

    hey JMoose,
FremontA’s done nothing wrong. I belive it’s going to build near your house. Wiebell Elementry school. How do you feel about this?

  11. Marty Says:

Fremont and Grimmer is about 2 miles and across an 8 lane freeway from Wiebel Elementary.

  12. JMoose Says:

You are Wrong Marty. Checking Google Earth Weible is on the same street (Grimmer) as the proposed stadium and less than one-mile from the Weible Elementary. Grimmer goes under 680 so there is direct access down Grimmer past Weible to the proposed stadium.

  13. bbox231 Says:

4 years out . . . . seems like a long time to be developing a plan and building an institituion that has some serious risk with projections of economic benefits.

But, ask yourselves what will the state of our domestic economy be in 4 years ?

How many businesses could we attract during that same 4 year time which would be lining the pockets of restaraunteers and hoteliers starting . . . . next month, or next quarter ?

Folks around this BLOG generalize (to the convenience of their pro-stadium stance) about business is dead and everyone else is trying to attract these same businesses . .. . . but some municipalities are successful in their attempts to attract those businesses even today. Businesses which bring quality jobs to their community.

What is the value of even a small but growing number of businesses in our midst NOW, as compared to a prospective and questionable economic advantage (read “discounted”) FUTURE value – - – someday ?

  14. Marty Says:

My point wasn’t access, it was distance an the implication major buffer, 680. Like I said, 2 miles and across an 8 lane freeway.

  15. Anon Says:

We simply have the wrong heads in the office. Their eyes are fixed on having a stadium in Fremont, and willing to spending about a years time on salaries paid by us tax payers, in addition, paid over $100K to the sport stadium sales and marketing firm to get a ‘proposal’ that’s full of assumptions for a stadium in Fremont. Would they do the same to bring in other businesses? Like Freddy said in the CC meeting that other alternatives would have to fall on his laps. To have people like him in office is a shame.

  16. lou Vandelay Says:

Technically, Anon, Freddy is not in office – he is a City employee who was put in his position and is kept there by those who we do elect to office.

Fred Diaz as City Manager is the culmination, the natural consequence of too many years of residents not taking local elections seriously. We’ve pretty consistently elected people whose interests are not with the actual taxpaying residents; their interests are with the Chamber of Commerce, commercial and residential developers, and large business interests.

Don’t get me wrong; we need businesses in Fremont. We need reasonable, smart development. But the residents need someone smart on their side as well. So, as the City Council races get under way, I hope folks will take their choices more seriously this time and put into office people who will do the right thing for Fremont. If that leads to the replacement of Mr. Diaz, that would be a very good thing.

  17. JMoose Says:

Marty the point of your post “Fremont and Grimmer is about 2 miles and across an 8 lane freeway from Wiebel Elementary.” leaves nothing for interpretation. Its wrong no matter how you try to spin your statement.

  18. VOR Says:

A Google Map search using Prominex, Inc. at 44777 S Grimmer Blvd. to the Weibel School address says 1.3 miles. Prominex sits west of the physical location of the proposed stadium.

  19. Shart Says:

Look you FCN losers, the last time we had an election the pro stadium candidates won. Even over a very qualified candidate like Steve Cho, who was luke
warm about making a decision that he was elected to do. So raise lots of money print lots of signs, oppose everything Fremont residents want then complain about it in blogs because this is the only forum you anti business and anti growth losers will ever have. Fazlur and Susev will get as many votes as you morons.

  20. 2cents Says:

“Don’t get me wrong; we need businesses in Fremont. We need reasonable, smart development.”

Lou hit the nail on the head. Fremonters have run out of excuses if we vote to keep our crap incumbency. The options are now available to us.

The man may as well have been talking to this whole damn city!

  21. Anon101 Says:

Even if both Anu and Bill are “un-seated” in the November election – it’s Bob’s Wiekowshy’s seat that would be the swing vote. That, if it happens, would be appointed by the council – would it not?

In which case, there still needs to be a third vote – in order to make real change; does there not?

  22. Anon101 Says:

I mean if Bob wins the assembly race….his seat will be open and that’s the third vote needed to make change.
