The photo above shows what will soon become Vargas Plateau Regional  Park. The park land at the top of Morrison Canyon Road was to have been opened a couple of years ago, but neighbors filed suit against the park district arguing that the access roads were unsafe.

The city didn’t want to fix the roads to serve the park, and the park district didn’t want to be on the hook for fixing city streets.

Now I’m told the framework is in place for a deal among the park district, the city and the neighbors to open the park in the not so distant future. The deal would require immediate improvements on the most dangerous sections of access roads before opening the park, and additional road improvements before building park infrastructure that would draw larger crowds.

I guess this means no more jogging up Morrison Cyn Road.

Finally = this was supposed to be opened years ago.

Let’s get some news about parks in Newark. Check out the aftermath of heavy-duty Roundup sprayed around the perimeter of Bridgepointe, Mirabeau and Mayhews Landing parks plus on the grass berm in front of the Silliman center.

The city plan calls for no watering or mowing at the three parks. Let the grass die and the parks become an eyesore to the neighborhoods. Not conducive to new businesses coming to town or retaining those few we have. Not conducive to home sales either. Who wants to live near a dead park?

With or without a utility tax, parks would have been affected. But city leaders need to come up with solutions that do not involve a scorched earth mentality. Suggestions were offered at the last city council meeting. Time to get with the program.
