Niles to learn fate of post office on April 21

nilesThe U.S. Postal Service has scheduled an April 21 meeting at Niles Elementary School to let Niles residents know whether or not its post office will be recommended for closure.

“The district manager doesn’t feel that the community at large really understands what we’re facing ,and he wants to make sure they’re clear on that.” Post Office spokesman Gus Ruiz said.

Niles is one of six post offices in the Bay District threatened with closure, along with two in Berkeley, two in Oakland and one in Richmond, Ruiz said.

The last time the feds came to Fremont (on Friday) they delivered good news in the form of a $333,000 check. Do the Feds only like to show when on happy occasions, or do the Feds giveth and then taketh away? We’ll know in a week — and I’ll try to find out sooner.

They can take our Post Office, but they can’t take . . . our FREEDOM!!!!

I hope they are going to announce they are keeping it open.

Closing a profitable PO like the one in the Niles Distrit of Fremont would be a ridiculous response to the USPS’s woes.

If it is closed, maybe we should ask Postmaster General Potter if he’d be willing to deduct the amount of Niles PO’s profitablity from his 2011 salary?

I would be embarrassed to be the leader of an organization that will waste its time targeting a profitable postal outlet for closure during a recession and when the USPS should be trying to keep every dime they can make?

Guess we’ll see on April 21st?

Would you hold a town hall meeting of residents who harbor strong opinions about keeping their post office to announce its closure?

If the USPS does it would show their total lack of ability to make smart decisions, like the closure of post offices.

I think most people are reading into it the same way. Hard to imagine the Postal Service district manager is going to come to Niles to deliver bad news. That’s what press releases are for.

I don’t see a time posted for the NIles Post Office meeting, but I’m going to assume it is an evening event. Martz is out of town. If somebody that reads this blog attends, maybe you wouldn’t mind posting what was said. Thanks in advance.
