I’m the person with the stats from Tony Hawk he mentions in his article and have been involved in design of the new park. I’m insulted on behalf of the skaters that he assumes are all vandals and criminals. The park needs to be in a place that encourages families to visit. The skaters don’t need cops, just attentive adults.

I think these neighbors regret not speaking out when Fremont built an ugly water park across the street, and are taking their frustrations out on the skate park.

If there are other parents that feel like I do, come to the Recreation Commission meeting on 7/21 at 7 pm at the City Council chambers, and join me in standing up for the park.

I would much rather see our youth than not. So many kids today in our community are invisible. Playing alone in their homes with their friendly Xbox’s, Wii’s, Playstations, and computer video games. Giving them an outside physical place to play is worth it. Get our kids outside.

Holy (poop). There’s no way I’m going to read that diatribe. All I have to say in response is that the Livermore kids worked for years and years to try to raise their own money to open a skate park. It was quite literally a grass roots effort from the children and teens to get our skatepark built.

Point number two is IDLE HANDS ARE THE DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND. I’m 29 years old now, but when I was a teenager in Livermore there was absolutely nothing to do. No good movie theater, no skatepark, and whenever kids tried to put together a show, the cops swarmed the place waiting for a harmless 17-year-old to light a cigarette instead of seeking out the tweakers camping in the WalMart parking lot. A skate park means the kids are skating at the park instead of in the parking lots of businesses who don’t want them there… or breaking the law in other ways.

What logical, sane adult would complain about children and teens wanting to be outside getting some physical exersize, intead of inside playing Red Dead, smoking pot, or working on their latest graffiti masterpiece? What a jerk.

As a Livermore resident who’s seen none of this supposed skatepark crime this guy claims to know about, and as a proud Ohlone College grad, I must say Fremont deserves a skate park– wussie or not.
