There isn’t any reason why we must resign ourselves to this spiritual travesty that is the tree harvesting and cementing over of lovely, Niles Canyon.

This isn’t about safety! If it was then it would have already been done decades ago.

And sure Fremont ain’t a “sleepy” town anymore, but it hasn’t been since at least around the time they built Ohlone. When was that? 1973?
And even if the population is 5 times what it was 25 years ago, why does that mean we have to turn Niles into a four lane highway? Isn’t that what the freeways are for?

Is a complete reworking of Mission Blvd. next? That would seem to fit this maniacal logic of convienience. It sure would make it easier for those of us in south Fremont to get to Castro Valley if we didn’t have to stop at all those pesky lights.

No I’m sorry, but I personally can’t buy this crap.

By acquiescing to “masterminds” at Caltrans we are allowing something that we find transcendent to be destroyed.

It is a profound mistake to believe this is upsetting only to people who have lived here all their life.
Anyone with a soul that communicates with beauty knows that sacrificing what we now have in Niles for:

-A new bridge for fish passage?
-Rock anchors with rock netting?
-Rock slope protection?
-AC overlay?
-Enviornmental mitigation?
-Centerline and Shoulder rumble strips?
-less trees and wider lane
-concrete and asphalt shoulders instead of dirt

will not improve our quality of life.

Just about every bit of the area has been changed, much of it not for the better.
I have a incredible sympathy for people that have uprooted themselves from their cultures all over the world and have had to transplant themselves into the unknown.
Every time I walk out my front door I’m confronted with profound changes that are harder and harder to deal with. I’ve never really moved very far from where I was born, but really none of that world exists any more. I’m an anachonism and a transplant that’s never been moved, my roots have been cut off, although I’ve been left in place.
I’ve always enjoyed the drive through Niles Canyon — seeing the places we used to swim at the underpass, smelling the Eucaliptus and Bay Laurel, watching the huge Sycamore leaves blow around. It was one place that always reminded me so much of home. That and the arch entry at Washington High.
Should a moved when I could a and at least made a choice.

Despite politicians wishes we are no longer a sleeply little town. The population of the area has exploded over the years and in the name of progress we have lost a lot of beautiful landmarks.
Niles Canyon would be full of Condo’s if devlopers could figure out a way of developing Niles Canyon.
Our local ineffective politicians would not stop the developers, it is there cash cow during elections.
