When Fremont spent millions beautifying Bay Street in Irvington last year, the goal was for the current crop of shop owners to abandon ship and sell to developers, who would build much bigger structures with apartments atop retail stores.
For better or worse, that vision moved a bit closer to reality recently with the closure of the Mid East Grocery and Deli. The couple that owned the deli will still be open for catering, but will no long be selling 8-pound containers of tahini (I bought one) or hommeade falafels, of which I bought many.
