Mission to get a craft beer bar

Fremont Planning Commissioners has just done something that could be worth a few votes when they inevitably run for City Council: They’ve brought booze back to Mission San Jose.

In a few months, “California Craft Beer” will open at 43377 Mission Boulevard. The future owner of the shop just blew me off, but his lady friend tells me the establishment will be sort of like “Starbucks, but with beer.” From what I can gather, that means no pool, no music and no karaoke.

Also, this being Fremont, the place will close at 10 p.m. I’m guessing Happy Hour will be from 1 to 2 p.m.

I’m no Mission San Jose historian, but I’ve been told this will be the first bar-like establishment since The Mission Bell Tavern, which closed some time ago. I was also told that the Mission was was home to about a dozen bars, but Ms. Olive Hyde — the woman for whom the art gallery is named — was a big fan of the temperance movement. Beginning in the 1940s, she apparently bought up the bars and closed them down.

The Mission Bell was in the building that now holds the Color Me Mine shop.

Mission needs a dive bar again, not some frou frou craft beer establishment. Let alone one that closes at 10. What’s the point of that?

Is it a bar, or is it a beer shop? If it’s a shop, closing at 10pm is probably fine. If it’s a bar, that’s just odd. Maybe that’s why Matt’s listing it as “bar-like”.

Either way, welcome to Fremont. Right now we have two decent beer spots of which I’m aware: Mission Liquors (store) and Mojo’s (bar). BevMo doesn’t count. It’d be nice to have more.

Greg, Mission Pizza has the best beer selection on tap! Bronco Billy’s in Irvington is now selling Drakes on tap and the liquor store next to them also has a good selection. The liquor store near Massimos has a unbelievable selection and will try and bring in your favorites!

Man, I sure do miss the old Mission Bell Tavern. It gave Mission San Jose some real character.

@BigT, thanks for the heads-up on Cork ‘n’ Bottle. For some reason I had that one pegged as a wine store, so I will definitely check it out.

Mission Pizza does have a good selection, and pretty darn good pizza as well. I haven’t been to that Bronco Billy’s; maybe I need to give it a try.

As long as we’re talking about restaurants that have good beer selections, Jack’s Brewing has a few nice beers (the double IPA they’re pouring currently is pretty good), and the BJ’s in Newark has a good selection, having recently added Drake’s Denogginizer.

While we’re at it can anyone explain why the powers that be keep putting the kibosh on reopening Joes Corner in Niles? Ground control to Chief Steckler…what say you?

Whatever happened to the proposed Fremont brewery?

I lived in old Mission San Jose as a young man. I have fond memories of playing shuffle board with my father in law as we drank a few beers at Mission Bell Tavern.

Next thing you know there will be a place to dance as long as it closes at 6 PM.
