New Haven USD committee considers selling former Union City school

A committee appointed to study the feasibility of selling New Haven Unified School District properties has recommended that a former school site be sold, a district spokesman said.

The committee recommended to the New Haven school board Tuesday that the now-closed Cabello Elementary School, at 4500 Cabello St., be sold to help offset the district’s budget shortfalls, New Haven spokesman Rick LaPlante said.

The district’s financial woes have been caused by continuing state cuts to education, LaPlante said.

The seven-member committee — which includes Union City parents, teachers and representatives of the business community and the school district — met twice in late September and held a public meeting on Monday before delivering its report to the school board.

Dutra-Cerro-Graden, a Hayward-based real estate broker working with the school district, is confident that developers would be interested in the Cabello property when it becomes available, LaPlante said. The Educational Services Center, which houses the district office at 34200 Alvarado-Niles Road, also was considered for sale. However, the committee was not convinced that selling the property was economically feasible for the district, LaPlante said

The five-member school board will consider the committee’s recommendation at its Oct. 16 meeting.
