League of Volunteers asking for donations for annual Thanksgiving dinner

The League of Volunteers fed nearly 5,500 people in need during its annual Thanksgiving dinner last year.

Shirley Sisk, the Newark-based nonprofit group’s executive director, said it will need help from the public this year to match that act of charity.

The League of Volunteers, also known as LOV, is asking people to donate food, including turkeys, hams and other traditional holiday dishes, Sisk said. The nonprofit also needs donated cooking supplies, such as hundreds of oval aluminum roasting pans.

Monetary donations, which are tax-deductible, also are welcome, Sisk said.

In what has become a Tri-City-area tradition, LOV last year fed thousands of people in a free Thanksgiving supper served at Newark Pavilion at 6430 Thornton Ave. Volunteers also delivered free meals that same day to homebound people in the Tri-City and greater Hayward areas.
