Councilwoman Anu Natarajan, who finished third in the mayoral election, will remain Fremont’s vice mayor. Mayor-elect Bill Harrison is slated to replace Mayor Gus Morrison officially at a Dec. 4 council meeting.

Friday, we caught up with Natarajan by phone and she said she is unsure if she will run for re-election in 2014, when her council term expires.

“I am now the most senior member of the City Council and, in that role, I’d like to bring all the council members together as a team,” she said. “The reason I ran for mayor was that Fremont is in this great place where we have wonderful things happening. I’d like to get the community excited about where Fremont is.”

As for future political office?

“I just gave everything I had in running a campaign for mayor,” she said. “I haven’t even thought about the next two years.”

This was one of the strangest mayor races in any city I have lived. It certainly wasn’t very competitive. But perhaps there’s a notion ingrained that it’s not campaigning if it’s clean. Which I think this election was, relative to recent races in Oakland, SJ and SF.

Not sure if that makes me proud of Fremont or disappointed.
