Get your FREE reusable bag from City Hall!
In order to save valuable natural resources, reduce litter, and reduce the cost to the public of litter cleanup, a new countywide ordinance has been adopted by the Alameda County Waste Management Authority to promote the use of reusable bags in place of single-use plastic carryout bags.
Plastic bags are one of the most common litter items found in our creeks, storm drains and streets — but one reusable bag can replace more than 600 single-use bags over its lifetime.
Newark residents may pick up a FREE reusable bag from the Public Works Counter at City Hall, located on the first floor at 37101 Newark Blvd. Limit one per household. Reusable bags are available on a first come, first served basis 8:00am – 12:00 noon and 1:00 – 5:00pm on the following dates:
Thursday, December 13th
Friday, December 14th
Monday, December 17th
Tuesday, December 18th
Wednesday, December 19th
Thursday, December 20th
Beginning January 1, 2013, stores in Alameda County that sell packaged foods and/or alcohol – including most grocery stores, minimarts, convenience stores, liquor stores, and pharmacies – will no longer provide customers with single-use bags at checkout. Bags made of recycled paper or reusable bags may be available for a minimum price of 10 cents per bag. Consumers may bring any type of bags from home they wish – and are strongly encouraged to do so!
