A community group dedicated to celebrating black history has scheduled a ceremony Sunday to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Afro-American Cultural & Historical Society — a Newark-based organization — will hold its 36th annual commemoration of the slain civil rights leader.

The service is slated to begin at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Newark, 35450 Newark Blvd.

It will be hosted by the Rev. Garrett Yamada, event organizers said. The scheduled keynote speaker is the Rev. Hurmon Hamilton, pastor of Abundant Life Christian Fellowship in Mountain View.

A reception immediately will follow the service.
