Fremont Unified School District and teachers reach tentative contract agreement

The Fremont teachers’ labor union (Fremont Unified District Teachers Association) and the Fremont Unified School District have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract. The two sides have been negotiating on a new deal for 14 months, and teachers declared an impasse in negotiations in March (two months ago). If ratified by both sides, as expected, the deal expires June 30, 2015.

According to a joint press release, the deal includes the first salary increase for Fremont teachers since 2007. The Teachers Association will hold a ratification vote May 22-29, while the School District board members are expected to ratify the agreement at their June 12 meeting.

Tesla Motors fully repays $465 million federal loan nine years early

After the Solyndra debacle, Fremont was starting to become one of President Obama’s political liabilities and it would have only gotten worse if the Tesla Motors loan didn’t work out. Fortunately for all involved parties, Tesla — which is HQ’d in Palo Alto but does its manufacturing in Fremont — is the ‘anti-Solyndra.’

Read the story by Dana Hull:

In a boost for the Obama Administration and controversial federal cleantech programs, electric vehicle maker Tesla Motors (TSLA) announced Wednesday it paid back its $465 million government loan nine years early.

The U.S. Department of Energy oversees $34 billion in taxpayer-funded loans for 33 clean energy projects, and Tesla is the first American car company to pay back its loan. The DOE loans came under fierce criticism from Congressional Republicans in the wake of the high-profile 2011 bankruptcy of Fremont solar manufacturer Solyndra, with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney calling Tesla a “loser” in a presidential debate last fall.

“This is another important contribution to what the Obama Administration has done to preserve and promote America’s auto industry,” U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said in a statement Wednesday. “This announcement is also good news for the future of America’s growing electric vehicle industry.”

Moniz noted that sales of electric vehicles in the United States tripled last year and said “Tesla and other U.S. manufacturers are in a strong position to compete for this growing global market.

Fremont: Officers fatally shoot dog after it attacks, police say

Story by Natalie Alund:

FREMONT — Officers shot and killed a dog Monday after the animal attacked them at a Fremont home, police said.

The officers were not injured and the breed of the dog was not known, police said.

Officers were called at 8:10 p.m. to the 48200 block of Sawleaf Street for a report of a vicious dog, said police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques.

A 911 caller told dispatchers that four dogs were loose and had chased a neighbor; the caller also said that one of the dogs may have bit another person a week earlier, Bosques said.

As officers arrived, they were challenged by three of the dogs. The largest and most aggressive was initially fended off, Bosques said, but the dog then began to attack officers, forcing them to shoot it.

The dog was transported to a veterinarian’s office, but later died, Bosques said.

The other dogs were not injured.

Huge parcel in Fremont purchased, slated for development

I was out of town for a few days, so our Business section handled this one. This Fremont parcel has a ton of history behind it, including being a ballpark site once considered by A’s owners. Here’s the story by George Avalos:

FREMONT — A realty firm has bought a big chunk of vacant land in Fremont that is expected to become a key piece of the East Bay city’s economic mosaic with office buildings, research and manufacturing facilities, and retail complexes.

Newport Beach-based Integral Communities, which develops mixed-use projects, bought the 150-acre site near Interstate 880 and Auto Mall Parkway from San Jose-based Cisco Systems (CSCO).

“This is a very significant piece of property, it’s a great piece of property,” said C. Evan Knapp, a principal with Integral Communities. “It is important for Fremont. It is important for the whole 880 corridor.”

Integral has held some preliminary discussions with the city of Fremont about what might be developed on the site.

“We want to listen to what Fremont wants, what the constituents want, and then go out and execute on what people want,” Knapp said. “We have kicked around some concepts, but we haven’t decided yet.”

Fremont officials would like to see the parcel occupied by office buildings, tech campuses, research facilities and industrial and manufacturing complexes, as well as retail stores and auto dealerships.

“We want this to be a site for job creation,” said Kelly Kline, Fremont’s economic development director. “This is also a great opportunity to expand the Fremont auto mall.”

Kline added, “Residential is not allowed at this point.”

Historic Newark schoolhouse held at Ardenwood Farm may be demolished

NEWARK — City officials are considering whether to demolish a 129-year-old schoolhouse, even though it is one of Newark’s few buildings to be designated a historical resource.

The proposed demolition of Mowry’s Landing School, which was built in 1884, would save tax dollars but anger local preservationists.

Newark would like to save the one-room building, but restoring it might cost as much as $850,000, said Ray Collier, Newark’s chief building official. “Our first choice is to sell it or give it to a nonprofit, but we haven’t been able to do that,” he said. “Restoring it will cost a lot, and we have no practical use.”

While the City Council considers those options, its members voted unanimously last week to pay for part of an environmental impact report that will study the effects of getting rid of it. Newark will share the report’s costs with the East Bay Regional Park District, which has housed the 19th-century school room at Ardenwood Historic Farm in Fremont. The single-story, wood-frame structure — which is 26 feet by 42 feet, with a rectangular shape — was built near what is now NewPark Mall.

Fremont police: Missing 15-year-old girl found in Pleasanton

Story by colleague Natalie Alund:

PLEASANTON — A missing 15-year-old girl who disappeared from her uncle’s Fremont home more than a week ago and was thought to be in the company of a man twice her age has been located in Pleasanton, police said Tuesday.

The teenager, reported missing May 5 from her uncle’s home in the Irvington area of Fremont, was found in good health, said Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques.

A preliminary investigation revealed the girl had left her uncle’s home voluntarily, Bosques said.

Police believed she was with 30-year-old Ryan Griggs, who was possibly driving a stolen white Ford F150 pickup with a white camper shell and raised suspension. The truck’s license plate is 6E82209. He is described as a white man, 6 feet 2 inches tall, 200 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes.

It was not immediately clear who located the girl, or if Griggs was with her when she was found.
