Foster father of missing 5-year-old boy taken away by police for questioning

Two Oakland police detectives took Louis Ross, the foster father of missing 5-year-old Hassani Campbell, away from his home today at 1:34 p.m. for more questioning. Here’s video of it. Kind of uneventful, but only The Argus (Bay Area News Group) and Channel 7 were present.

Reporter’s notebook: Urango trial 2/11

The following are tidbits and outtakes that didn’t make it into recent stories about the trial of Manuel David Urango, the man charged with killing Alia Ansari in Fremont’s Glenmoor neighborhood in October 2006. The trial started in mid-January, is expected to continue on Wednesday and could last through the end of the month.

Session date: Feb. 11, 2008 

Prosecutor Jerry Herman has been using his laptop computer and a projector to display images on a screen for jurors and witnesses. Delivery driver Rodney White was asked to look at the screen and he had a hard time finding the area of Farwell Drive and Truman Court, where he witnessed a shooting a day before Ansari died, on the map. “I’m telling you, this is a terrible map,” White said, alluding the fact that the aerial image was blurry. After Herman focused the image, a juror then quipped, “you should have done that a couple weeks ago.”

Reporting remotely

For much of the last three months I’ve been on the road so to say. Typically I’d write my crime stories from a desktop computer in a building formerly inhabited by PG&E. (Seriously, it was.) But since the beginning of December I have been filing from various hallways, cold corners, stairwells and uncomfortable benches at two different courthouses using my laptop …

 

This is actually a picture of the hallway at the Thomas J. Cahill Hall of Justice from which I filed my stories in December and January about Omeed Aziz Popal, the Fremont resident charged in the August 2006 hit and run spree.
