Hillary Boosts The Ratings

Apparently, Hillary Clinton is ratings gold. One night after the broadcast networks experienced a Nielsen dip with coverage of the Democratic Convention, the numbers went up with Hillary’s fiery “No way, no how, no McCain” speech.

According to TV Week, the Tuesday convention ratings for NBC were up 1.19 million viewers from Monday to give the network an average of 6.04 million viewers for the hour. ABC was also up, gaining 490,000 viewers to post an average of 4.27 million. Only, CBS was down — 127,000 (3.39 million). On Monday, the network numbers, collectively, were down about 1 million viewers compared to four years ago.

While the networks — with their limited coverage — continue to lead the ratings race, it’s clear that the 24-hour cable stations are a primary source for convention news. All of the cable stations experienced double-digit ratings boosts for their Monday telecasts, compared to opening night four years ago. Their Tuesday-night numbers were not available at the time of this post.

The MSNBC coverage of the 2008 Democratic Party’s Convention is awful. Can anyone tell me what the real difference is between the various shows are, starting with Joe Scarborough and ending with Rachel Madow. Seems every show is a clone of the other one. Same old questions posed to the same old jounalist panel members offering opinions on how Obama should run his campaign and othewise repetitive and unsubtantiated rumors about which way the various subsections of the electorate is going to vote in November. Also egregious are the repetive questions of and interviews with the usual politicians/suspects - In contrast, PBS is doing a superior job with in depth historical and and current political analysis of the event including interviews with the ordinary delegates and non-delegates.
