Britney Does The VMAs; World Doesn’t Stop

MTV learned its lesson with Britney Spears. This time the network didn’t let her sing.

A year after Britney delivered a train-wreck performance at the Music Video Awards that made her a laughing stock and nearly derailed her career, she returned to the scene of the crime and lived to tell about it.

Of course, there was no singing and no slug-like dancing this time. Looking fabulous in a form-fitting silver dress that resembled Christmas tinsel, she simply delivered the show-opening welcome, saying “Thank you for all the love …” Yes, she did botch one line (”I’m here to celebrate … the 25th anniversity of the VMAs …”), but she did fine before giving way to a bizarre opening number featuring some kind of zombie creatures with light sabers and Rhianna mounted atop a big pyramid-like structure.

Britney did appear again to pick up three VMAs, including one for Video of the Year.

“I first want to thank God — first and foremost, for blessing me like this,” she said upon collecting her initial piece of Moon-Man hardware.

I have four words to describe this year’s VMAs: their worst show EVER. Not only did it seem like they were pandering to Britney by giving her 3 awards (to make up for last year’s embarrassment, perhaps?), but the performances were a total snoozefest (not even one person stood up during Kid Rock’s set) and there were no surprises, which is why we watch the VMAs in the first place. Maybe I am getting a little too old for MTV, but it has certainly lost its cutting edge, which is terribly disappointing. No more VMAs for me, I’m afraid.
