“Heroes”: An Explosive Finish

Here’s your recap for the latest episode of “Heroes”:

By DANNY WALLACE

Special to the Freak

“Two Heroes will die!” That tag has been playing for every ad I’ve seen for a week now. Would they keep their word? You’ll remember last season we had a few deaths also. Some were real and some were of a more temporary nature. Tonight’s Heroes finale did have a lot of firepower, but how much would be lethal?

Claire Bear was determined to bring down the company, ignoring the pleas of her mother, even breaking up with West to do what she believed was right. Only when her father, alive and well, walked into the door and told her to stop did she decide to let the company be.

Suresh, Sylar, Molly, and Maya had made their way to Isaac’s old apartment, which has now become, Suresh’s lab. Sylar was set on getting himself cured with the magic shot that Suresh had and going on the warpath again. Maya and Molly were bonding when Molly informed her new amigo that Alejandro was no longer alive. Maya, infuriated with Sylar began her crying game. Sylar decided to end it early with a single shot to the chest. Death number one! But wait, Suresh was ordered to administer the shot to see if it would bring Maya back to life. It worked, and we lost death number one. Elle busted in and allowed Syler to get away with the last injection…the injection that was to save Nikki.

“Heroes”: Truth & Consequences

NUP_110815_0023

Here’s a recap of the latest episode of “Heroes”:

By DANNY WALLACE
Special Correspondent

For an episode titled “Truth & Consequences” there wasn’t a whole lot of truth happening. Manipulation and versions of the truth were much more prominent.

Bob seems to be the master of this “certain point of view truth”. He told the entire Bennett household that Noah was dead, going so far as to give them his ashes, maybe from a beach bonfire. But we know Noah is alive and sort of well at the Company’s holding facility. He
also placed the blame for the entire situation of losing Claire on his daughter’s electrifying shoulders, which she reluctantly accepted. Suresh also seems to be convinced by these lies as he tells Noah that he is going to help people, not hurt them. Of course Suresh can’t
believe that all The Company has told him is a lie, even though Noah tells him exactly that.

And then there’s Maya, who spent the episode falling for bad-boy Sylar. There was even a very disturbing make-out session while her brother lay newly dead just inside Sylar’s motel room, courtesy of our watch-making friend. He did manage to get Maya to control her power by
herself before he offed her brother, so I guess he’s kinda thinking ahead. They did finally reach their New York destination where Sylar invited Suresh to return from New Orleans early, because they were watching Molly, and didn’t want to scare her, which was a very creepy
scene.

“Heroes” Recap: Cautionary Tales

By DANNY WALLACE
TV Freak Correspondent

Acceptance is a major part of life. Tonight we must accept that the whole save-the-world-from-total-destruction plot from Season 1 seems to have returned for the strike-shortened Season 2.

Hiro is unable to accept his father’s death. He goes back in time to save him, but his father accepts that he must die and tells Hiro that although “they have the powers of gods. That does not mean they can play God.” Hiro takes him on the Christmas Carol journey into the past so his father can relive the painful memories of his wife’s funeral. While at this moment 17 years ago, Hiro runs into his younger self pretending to be Takezo Kensei.

Young Hiro is appalled at the thought of his father dying and decides that he will save him. Elder Hiro realizes that he cannot change his father’s untimely demise, though he had no problem messing with the past. Deciding that though he can’t alter what will happen, he can find out who killed his dad, Hiro waits to find out who it is. When he sees that it is his
idol, Takezo, he is shocked. Hiro accepts that though his father is dead, his spirit will always live within himself, and so in this way his father will never die.

“Heroes”: Answers On The Way?

NUP_110722_1397

In our never-ending quest to provide more recaps, we deliver a rundown of Monday’s flashback episode of “Heroes”:

By DANNY WALLACE
TV Freak Correspondent

Answers! Sweet, cop-out answers! Tonight we learned that a lot can happen in four months. Weddings, escape plans, hospital stays, funerals. We also learned some very important lessons.

Lesson No. 1: Don’t get shot. Heroes have the ability to go all nuclear explosion, like Peter, then regroup and fly down out of the blast to save your falling brother before speeding him off to the hospital. You may be able to withstand being right next to that nuclear explosion with only burns like Nathan, but no worries, all you need is the healing blood of Adam and you’ll be fine. You may be able to run through burning walls, save little girls, be a hero to your son, find your wife’s newest personality, Gina the party girl, like our buddy DL. But if you make the junkie mad, you’ll get shot in the back and die. Unfortunately for DL, Good Karma doesn’t apply on
this show.

“Heroes” Recap: “Out Of Time”

NOTE: With the help of voluntary “show-trackers”, we continue our efforts to provide more episodic recaps here on the Freak blog. Up next is a rundown of the latest episode of “Heroes”:

By DANNY WALLACE
TV Freak Correspondent

Hiro is face down, captured by Kenzei, who explains that he has decided to join White Beards army for control of half of Japan and, of course, the girl. Yaeko claims to love Hiro and will not become Kensei’s bride, which doesn’t go over too well, and Kensei storms out claiming that he will change history.

Is The “Heroes” Worship Waning?

Heroescast
The gang from “Heroes.” Are you still feeling it? (NBC).

While watching the latest episode of “Heroes” last night, Mrs. TV Freak had to repeatedly jab me in the ribs to keep me from falling asleep. Maybe it was because I had been up since 5 a.m. Or maybe the episode was just an out-and-out snoozer.

We’re only five weeks into the new season and there is a lot of talk about a sophomore slump for “Heroes.” I’m usually wary of such declarations because I think many of us tend to automatically shift into the backlash mode when we’re dealing with something as wildly popular as “Heroes.”

TV Freak Promises More “Heroes”

You’ve heard of New Year’s resolutions. Here at the Freak House, we have New-Season TV resolutions.

I will cough up a detailed list as we get closer to premiere week, but I’ll let you know right now that at or near the top of that list will be an effort to provide more “Heroes” info via this blog. You seem to want it, so that’s what we’ll do.

And so, here are a few things we thought the diehard fans ought to be aware of:

– If you’ve got a jones for “Heroes” talk, one of the best places to go to is the 10th Wonder Podcast. They’ve just released a new edition this week that touches upon, among other things, the upcoming DVD set and key topics for Season 2.

– Members of the “Heroes” cast are taking turns presenting and discussing their favorite episodes in the run-up to Season 2. Monday night (9 p.m., NBC) Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia host “Homecoming”, the ninth episode from Season 1. This is the episode where Sylar hunts down Claire at her high school and Peter and Claire meet for the first time.

– And now here’s a preview clip of Season 2, courtesy of NBC:

“Heroes” Beams Up Uhura

Startrek

“Heroes” seems to be stocking up on “Star Trek” legends. In a casting move sure to please sci-fi buffs everywhere, the NBC drama has recruited Nichelle Nichols, best known as Lt. Uhura, communications officer for the Enterprise.

Nichols is the second classic “Star Trek” actor to appear on “Heroes,” joining George Takei, who played Mr. Sulu on the ’60s sci-fi series. Who’s next — Leonard Nimoy?

Nichols is expected to appear in only a few episodes as the grandmother of Monica, a new hero played by Dana Davis. She participated in a bit of TV history by smooching with William Shatner in a 1968 “Star Trek” episode — generally considered prime time’s first interracial kiss.

“Heroes” Graphic Novel In the Works

Heroescast
We could all use some “Heroes” (NBC photo).

It seems like an obvious marriage: NBC’s comic book-like adventure series, “Heroes,” hitched to the pages of a graphic novel. Well, it’s finally about to happen.

DC Comics, home to Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, has announced plans to publish a hardcover graphic novel based on “Heroes,” the Emmy-nominated series created by Pittsburg native Tim Kring.

The collection will be pegged to 43 comic-book vignettes that appeared on the “Heroes” website last season. It will also feature the artwork of legendary comic book artist Tim Sale (“Batman: The Long Halloween”), whose work was featured prominently throughout the first season of the series via the visuals created by a drug-addled painter with apocalyptic visions of the future.

And that reminds us to remind you to keep it tuned to the TV Freak for plenty of “Heroes” news leading up to the second season. We recently conducted a tour of the set in Southern California, where we talked to the actors and Kring — and also met Mr. Sale, who walked us through some of his amazing artwork.

Meanwhile, here are some key upcoming “Heroes” dates:

– Aug. 27: “World” promotional tour begins (No stops in the Bay Area)
– Augt. 28: Season 1 DVD set released
– Sept. 24: Season 2 kicks off on NBC

“Heroes” Mastermind Plots a New Course

Heroes.bmp

Pittsburg native Tim Kring, the creator of “Heroes,” is already hard at work on Season 2 of the blockbuster action series and he’s hoping to squeeze some more mind-blowing plots out of his writing team.

“We’ve become a show that sort of lives or dies by defying expectations, so that‘s how fans are going to gauge us,” he said during a one-on-one chat while making the rounds at NBC’s press-tour party. “Hopefully, by halfway through the season, people will be saying, ‘I could never have imagined the show going in this direction.’”

Kring, of course, won’t divulge many details about Season 2, other than the fact that it will resume four months after the big throw-down in New York. Hiro (Msai Oka), however, will be off on an entirely different timeline in feudal Japan.

“Season 1 was very much about these ordinary people suddenly becoming extraordinary,” he said. “And Season 2 starts with them having to go back to being ordinary. It’s sort of a ’How do you go back to the farm again?’ approach.”
