NBC Plans “Office” Spin-Off, Farewell to “ER”

Jumping the gun on its broadcast rivals, NBC unveiled its fall schedule on Wednesday. Among the highlights:

– In what could have diaster written all over it, “The Office” will spawn a spin-off series (Remember NBC’s success with “Joey”?). The show doesn’t have a tile yet, or a totally fleshed-out concept, or a cast, but the network plans to give it the coveted post-Super Bowl slot in 2009. NBC chief Ben Silverman says he won’t put the show on the air unless it “in no way harms the mothership.” Um, we’ll see. Read the rest of this entry »

Scranton Celebrates “The Office”

Couldn’t make it to Scranton this weekend to revel in the first “Office Convention”? Don’t worry, we go straight to the local source with a report from the Morning-Call newspaper.

Despite inclement weather, the convention drew more than 3,000 people to the first day, with the streets of Scranton (Pop. 76,000) playing host to live musical performances, contests and cast appearances.

Said University of Scranton President, the Rev. Scott Pilarz, “For us, (this event) is like winning the NCAA championship.”

Most of the show’s actors and writers showed for the event, but, alas, the big guns — Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer and Rainn Wilson — were all MIA. Hope they had good excuses. If not, shame on them.

TV Love Meter

Following up on a recent post about how TV writers manipulate romantic stroylines, we’re going to continue to monitor the exploits of two major Thursday-night couples: Meredith and Derek on “Grey’s Anatomy” and Jim and Pam on “The Office.”

In last night’s episodes, the writers for both shows reached into their hats and pulled out one of the oldest tricks in the book — The Third Party (which often can develop into the highly popular Love Triangle).

On “Grey’s,” Derek went camping with the guys, looking for “space.” That left Meredith vulnerable to the advances of Dr. Sloan (aka McSteamy). The latter two headed for a bar after work, but before anything could develop, who should swoop in? Derek, of course. Meredith’s initial wall of resistance quickly melted away and they kissed, leaving fans to wonder: How long will it last this time? (And will Sloan be a factor in weeks to come?)

Meanwhile, on “The Office,” news came that the Scranton and Stamford branches of Dunder Mifflin will merge — meaning that Jim and Pam will finally be reunited. … But wait! Coming over in the merge will be that mystery woman, Karen (Rashida Jones), who admitted to us late in the episode that “I’m into Jim.”

Uh-oh — can you feel the compeition coming?

TV’s love connections

Prime-time romance is a funny thing. TV writers work their tails off to find two characters/actors who have undeniable chemistry (ie: Sam and Diane on “Cheers”) and then they go about trying to come up with ways to keep them apart. After all, the theory goes that once they’re together, the fun goes out of the whole thing (See: David and Maddie on “Moonlighting”).

Last night, you could see this dynamic playing out in two very different shows: “Grey’s Anatomy” and “The Office.”

On “Grey’s Anatomy,” you’ve got Meredith and Derek, who, over two-plus seasons, have had a one-night stand, followed by a torrid afffair, followed by a painful breakup, followed by a breathless workplace romp, followed by … well, you get the idea.

Recently, Meredith found herself trying to pick between Derek and nice-guy vet Finn. But simultaneously, Derek was trying to be noble and step aside. (Oh, those clever writers!). And judging from the preview clips of next week’s show, he’s about to jump in bed with another woman. (Just call him McIdiot.)

The dilemma TV writers face is that, if they overplay their hand with this kind of on-again-off-again stuff, it can get old and frustrating pretty fast. I’ve talked with several “Grey’s” fans who say they just don’t care anymore whether Meredith and Derek get together. How about you? Are you still intrigued by their relationship?

Now, let’s turn to “The Office,” where you have a very different kind of relationship between Jim and Pam — one that theoretically isn’t at the heart of the show, but still packs a powerful allure. Jim and Pam were your typical workplace soulmates who enjoyed long chats and a flirty kind of rapport — even as she prepared to marry someone else.

That all ended when Jim finally made a bold declaration of love and kissed Pam in last season’s finale. Now the separation: Jim has moved to another regional branch and Pam has called off her wedding.

As viewers, we know they’re absolutely right for each other and we’re waiting for them to figure that out. Along the way, the writers have been brilliant in deftly handling the relationship — enticing us and teasing us while not going overboard with it. In many ways, the Jim-Pam pairing is one of the most intriguing and emotionally honest relationships we’ve seen on TV in years (and all without a moment of sex!). So much attention to detail. So many small, but very telling moments.

Last night’s show ended with a brilliant scene as the lovelorn Jim made an after-hours call to the office not thinking Pam would answer (or did he plan it all along?). They stammered awkwardly at the start (obviously so much has gone unaddressed), but then they gradually slipped into their old routine of easy chit-chat about a variety of things, with him calling her by her last name (Beesly). … Finally, when it was time to hang up, it got awkward all over again. Ah, such melancholy. Such perfection. Bring on some more.

So who are the TV couples who rock your world these days? What past TV relationships have you most enjoyed? Do tell.

Feeling hot, hot, hot

Tonight we hand out the TCA Awards. You can tell it’s a special event because all the critics actually don nice duds and try to behave ourselves. And the gala is extra special this year because it’s our chance to thumb our noses at the Emmy nominations, which were so hideous. (Something tells me we’re not going to ignore “Lost”). I’ll provide the rundown in a later entry.

Last night was NBC’s all-star party, which was held on an expansive stretch of lawn behind the Ritz and was pushed back an hour to 7 p.m. because of the brutal heat. It’s weird: During past press tours, I’ve been able to call home every night and brag about the lovely weather to my wife and kids, who are typically basting like hams. But now, we’re all in the same roasting pan.

Still, there was a decent turnout of NBC stars for the party and we managed to sweat it out together. I was most eager to talk to the stars of “The Office,” which has developed into my favorite comedy. And I was pleased to discover that Rainn Wilson, who plays Dwight, remembered me from a phone interview I did with him earlier this year about his hilarious blog on ‘The Office” website.

And speaking of hot, fans of “The Office” will be anxiously wondering what’s goping to happen with Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer), those star-crossed lovers who had a stunning liplock at the end of last season. Here’s what Krasinski had to say about it:

“The Office” online

Anyone who regularly follows our columns in the Times knows that I’m totally in love with “The Office.” Well, this summer, NBC is providing fans with a little extra treat. Beginning today, the first two of 10 original stand-alone “webisodes” of the show are airing exclusively on the network’s Website.

Lasting about 3 minutes apiece, they present a serialized “whodunit,” in which accountants at the Dunder Mifflin paper company discover that $3,000 is missing from office coffers. Now, the search is on to find the culprit.

I checked out the webisodes this morning and found them to be only mildly amusing. And there was one major disappointment. The front-line “Office” characters — Michael, Dwight, Jim and Pam — are nowhere to be found.

Still, fans of the show might want to check them out and, please, let us know what you think. You can view the webisodes here.
