Time Waster: Pineapple Express

Pineapple Express the video game

It’s a shameless rip-off of Donkey Kong, but this Pineapple Express Flash game is fairly entertaining.

You choose between Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) or Saul Silver (James Franco) and you go through levels that resemble that game at the center of King of Kong. The arrow keys move your character. The space button is used to jump.

You have to dodge those pineapples and get that strange baggie at the top. Hmm, I wonder what’s in there … . Anyway, this may be a game where a high score really matters.

Time Waster: Pandemonium!

Pandemonium game

With an art style that’s reminiscent of The Behemoth’s Castle Crashers or Alien Hominid, Pandemonium! is easy on the eyes. It’s also a pretty good game.

Players take on the role of an adventurer who finds a golden cupcake. When he gets his hands on the treasure, it unfortunately warps him to this odd netherworld where he has to collect gold cupcakes and dodge falling blocks on a diamond-shaped field.

I know it’s weird. But it’s also strangely addictive. If you play, it’s OK to do it with the sound off in the office. Pandemonium! has the thumping techno track that’s in a zillion other indie games. You’re not missing anything.

Time waster: TypeRacer

TypeRacer

Want to see who’s the fastest typist in the office? Well, TypeRacer is good way to find out. The object of the game is simple: Type the words you see on screen. The tiny Beetle moves faster or slower depending on your speed. I played against the casual games maven (my significant other) and crashed and burned. My stubby fingers were no match for hers. I type about 60 words per minute. She hit somewhere around 90. Go figure.

Time waster: Mr. Bounce

MrBounce

Mr. Bounce reminds me of Arkanoid mixed in with a little Peggle. The tutorial goes by fast and the levels themselves are good for about five minutes or so depending on your skill level.

Players basically bounce this squarish dot and knock down circles a la Arkanoid. The one big difference is that they can know control the height and speed of the dot. The Peggle-factor comes in the aiming. This is a title that forces you to line up that perfect shot.

Time waster: Dance Monkey Dance

DanceMonkeyDance.jpg

My girlfriend, the casual games maven that she is, found Dance Monkey Dance a while back and begged me to play it. I did. It’s a simple music rhythm game where you press the arrow keys as they cross the designated beat space. Think of it as Dance Dance Revolution for your index finger with music that’s less annoying.

If you do have a chance to play this while the boss isn’t looking, put on the headphones and listen to the game with the sound. For some reason, monkey shrieking is hilarious.

Time waster: Music Catch

Music Catch

In terms of Time wasters, Music Catch is decent. It’s not going to wow you but it’s good if you have five or 10 minutes of free time this Memorial Day weekend.

The goal of the game is to catch shapes with your little cursor. Yellow shapes are good and makes the cursor grow bigger. Red cursors are bad and shrinks it. The music part of Music Catch is actually in level design. It looks like the spewing shapes are tied to the music.

Time waster: SteerWheels

SteerWheels.jpg

SteerWheels has a simple premise: Push that yellow ball to that yellow line. What’s the catch? The hard part is the game’s physics, which takes momentum into account. This isn’t just pressing go and getting things done. It’s more complicated than that and pretty fun to boot.

Time waster: Doeo!

DOEO.jpg

The premise behind Doeo! is simple. There are these pink blocklike creatures called Doeos and you have to scroll your mouse over them to collect them. Grab the set amount before the time limit expires and you move on to the next stage.

Overall, it’s supercasual and a great time-waster. The game has the same zany look and music as Katamari Damacy. I guarantee you’ll laugh at least once during the games more humorous levels.

A polished game like this is worth the time for those with 10 minutes to kill.

Playing politics can be fun (election game)

Elections2.jpg

Sometimes things in our real-life would make great games. I always wondered what a valet title would play like and then someone came out with Parking Perfection. I always wondered about air traffic controllers and then Danny found an Air Traffic Controller sim.

I always thought a game where you run for president would be amazing. It would be a great strategy game and also teach players about the complexity of running a campaign. I know that the Political Machine 2008 won’t come out until June so where can a politics junkie get his fix?

Mystery author hopes to making killing in casual games

James Patterson, the author of “Kiss the Girls” and “Along Came a Spider,” is taking his mystery storytelling into casual games with the help of none other than Jane Jensen, the mastermind behind the Gabriel Knight adventure games.

If this thing gets off the ground, the genre may get more of a kick in the pants. First, we have “Phoenix Wright” and then we get “Sam & Max” Maybe this adventure game revitalization could grow into a full-fledged renaissance. Keep your fingers crossed.
