The PAX 10 are the ten best independent games as determined by Penny Arcade and their panel of industry experts. But who are these people? That’s what I’ve set out to find by asking each of them five questions about their games, their companies and independent gaming in general.
And you thought this week would be all E3 all the time, didn’t you?
The last but certainly not the least of the PAX 10 to get the five question interview treatment is the dev team behind Polarity, a group from Carnegie Mellon University. Thanks to Daniel Bryner, Gaurav Shrivastava, Howard Braham, Samuel Spiro, Przemyslaw Iwanowski, Allison Theus and Stanley Rosenbaum for making the time to answer some questions.
Thanks again to the Polarity team and the other nine PAX 10 selections for taking the time to answer some questions.

You could be playing Chronotron right now.
That link above isn’t to the site like the others, it’s to the actual game. Chronotron is a browser-based Flash game, the only one of the ten. But don’t let the medium fool you, it’s actually a very deep, complex game involving time travel and past selves. Plus the time machine looks kinda like the Tardis so it gets bonus points for that.
Go try the game for yourself, then come back here for five questions with its developer, Joe Rheaume.

Project Aftermath, the sci-fi tactical RTS from Games Faction, is one of the most ambitious projects among the PAX 10. It also has one of the smallest crews - a designer, a coder and an artist.
I asked five questions to 33% of Games Faction, Managing Director Lee Hickey, about the game and logistics behind working with such a small team.

You’ve played Audiosurf, right? No? Really? Well go on Steam and play Audiosurf. Seriously, right now. If you’re at work fake an injury so you can go home and play.
In short I’m kind of a fan of the game, so it was my privilege to ask five questions to its creator Dylan Fitterer.

Impulse is the product of one of the two student teams included in the PAX 10. I try to seek out student games since the ones good enough to get exposure usually lead to some pretty great things. For example Portal began life as a student project and won the Independent Games Festival Student Showcase and we all know where that turned out.
I sent five questions to Game Design Lead Andrew Williams about the game, the team and their future plans.

Perhaps one of the most intriguing of the PAX 10 is Molly Rocket’s Sushi Bar Samurai, described by the PAX 10 press release as “exploratory puzzle.” To find out more I asked Molly Rocket President Casey Muratori.

I admit I have a bias with this one. I loved the original Strange Attractors and I was excited to learn a sequel was in the works. The game, with its one-button controls and surprisingly challenging gameplay, was an addiction of mine for quite a while.
To that end I was pleased to ask five questions to Ominous Development Lead Designer Eric Walker about the game, the company and independent gaming.

Twisted Pixel Games is somewhat unique in the world of independent games. Rather than starting with a couple guys in a garage they formed a team to both create original titles as well as provide contract work to other studios, such as their work for Midway on NBA Ballers and Blitz: The League II.
I had the opportunity to ask five questions to CEO Michael Wilford about their first original title, The Maw (coming soon to Xbox Live Arcade) as well as their strategy and independent games.

Next up is Ryan Clark, co-founder and CEO of Grubby Games, creators of The Amazing Brain Train as well as the fairly long-running series of Professor Fizzwizzle games.

Today is a good day for Torpex Games. Not only were they selected for the PAX 10 but their game, Schizoid, went on sale on Xbox Live Arcade to rave reviews.
Company President Bill Dugan took time out of what I assume must be a legendary party to answer my five questions.
