Kwame Brown Gets One Year Deal From Warriors

After throwing double figures at Tyson Chandler and DeAndre Jordan, the Warriors have settled on Kwame Brown.

The journeyman center who has established himself as a quality back-up in recent years, signed a one-year deal for $7 million, a team source confirmed. He will arrive in Oakland tonight. Yahoo! Sports first reported the deal.

Brown will be paired with center Andris Biedrins, bringing physicality and rebounding to the front line. At 28, the former No. 1 overall pick is a solid one-on-one defender. He averaged 7.9 points and 6.8 rebounds in 26 minutes with the Bobcats, for whom he started 50 games last season.

    Marcus,
Last night in the chat you told me Kwame was already there. Anyway not horrible, if it was for more then one year then it would horrible.

  • Niners in 2012

Terrible signing. He’s this years Dan Gadzuric.

  • GSWlifer

I dig it. 1 year is 1 year. We needed some size for this season and he fills that need. Let’s see how this plays out. It’s easy as a Warriors fan to always second guess this team, but let’s see how things go. Stranger things have happened.

    LMAO
    $7M for Kwame?
    WOW!!!
God when will this franchise learn

    Mah!!! Speriamo bene!

Good signing, I think I saw this coming, if they didn’t get a long term answer they were going to get the best they could for a one year stop gap. Chad Ford said something to the effect that Kwame isn’t bad but will get 4 mil a year more than he is worth given the free agent market. Who else is out there right now? No one I would give a multi-year contract to. Depending on what else they do, they should have cap room next year. Too many question marks on what GSW have on their roster right now, maybe by trade deadline or a real off season next year they can come up with a more thought out plan instead of normal knee jerk reaction moves.

  • PhilB

At least it’s better than throwing a multiyear deal at Chandler or Jordan. Once Chandler left New Orleans (and Chris Paul) he virtually disappeared, only to reappear on a loaded Mavericks team. In between he was quite average. With the Warriors he would have had a blue chip guard in Steph Curry to throw him lobs. In New York he gets…Toney Douglas. DeAndre Jordan is simply a less experienced version of Tyson. Adding Kwame for a year takes some of the pressure off of Biedrins and Ekpe Udoh.

Sometimes the best deals are the ones that you don’t make.

  • Lavalovers

I like it. We lost no one ( is that good?) but most importantly ,he can finish games at C. AB will play 25 minutes now, i say ab is backup from day one….. Kwame is huge and plays D. He’ll be hungry for a multiyear contract next year so he will be motivated. I applaud mr west.

Niners, you’ve got to be kidding. Dan Gadzuric??

I really like this signing. They’ve been singing defense like it’s a Christmas Carol. They got someone that can help anchor the defense and be a presence to anyone that wants to come into the paint. Kwame will knock you on your ass for it. How many guys on our team can you say that about? He brings a different dimension the team could really use. Offense is unnecessary given all the fire power we already have, not that Kwame is incapable.

  • deano

We needed size at center. We lost out on height when Chandler and Gasol refused to sign offer sheets from GSW. At least we got weight. Brown played much better last season than he had in the past. So he’s on the rise, even though he has been in the league a long time. I think that he and Biedrins will be a good tag team. Both will be able to play hard, without worrying about fouls.

  • commish

This year’s Webber. At least they r trying since they couldn’t get anyone else to bite. What a waste if the amnesty!

  • Lavalovers

Marcus. How is the dubs cap room next year? If we are below 500 at the deadline maybe we can trade some salarys and get way under the cap for next year? Is it possible? Can we trade Kwame for a draft pick or in a package fora long term piece. I like the move for this year and hopefully next year! Can someone find next years crop of free agents and post them? Uh oh boss is lookin…..

  • thedubfan

    @deano, @lavalovers, @philb, @ all of you:

You sound like the delusional Wolves fans when they signed Darko. $7.5 and $8M from the lakers. $9M from the Grizz and something like $4M from the Pistons and $1M from the Bobs. And the W’s go $7M. Pay him $4.5M and send all of sorry fools who still have to watch this “big move” a check for a couple of G’s to buy some good booze for these games.

Sorry, my apologies. I’m excessively ticked off right now and ultimately agree that the W’s had to go out and get a big man. It is what it is…but lets not get anywhere near calling this “good.” Because it’s not. It’s an average to acceptable move in an awful situation. Thank you Marcus Williams, Andris extension, and all the other wonderful moves.

  • Dirk Suave

Come on Dub fans. The Warriors had to give him 7 mil. The new CBA says each team has a minimum amount they have to spend on team salary. Giving Kwame that much had to be done to be in compliance. We still have 10 mil is space for next year. Now we need to hope Beans is ready to be the player he was and that Kwame plays a good back up 5. Or that Kwame finds the ability that had Jordan taking him 1st overall. That’s a long shot but we have to hope. Good signing. Needed a big and got one. Not the top 2 we wanted but a serviceable big nonetheless.

  • Niners in 2012

That minimum salary argument needs to die now, we were already at 85% before the signing.

Think about it, Biedrins worst year was 7/7 and people are impressed with Kwame’s 8/7? We coulda signed three guys at $3.5M each instead we blow our whole load on somebody not as good as Biedrins.

I’m surprised the Jerry West was part of a group that went after Nene and Jordan.

In the NBA teams don’t play defense until the playoffs. When teams get to the playoffs you need a defensive center. Jordan and Nene get schooled by Bynum and Gasol of the Lakers. Why would you guys want to sign them to long term deals?

Kwame can defend both Bynum and Gasol. It’s a good signing for you guys.

You have David Lee on the teams. He grabs rebounds like crazy but is a terrible defender. NBA stats are so misleading and it leads to crazy signings. Just like Biedrins a couple of years ago. He got stats from playing against teams that play no defense. Then you give him a good long deal and look what happened. The stats lie!

I’m surprised Jerry West doesn’t point this stuff out. What the use of having him there if he doesn’t point this stuff out?

Gasol, Nene, Chandler, and Jordan…fools gold everyone of them. Just like Berdrins was to you when you signed him to his current contract.

    Kwame can actually play defense.

@ Niners in 2012: Do even watch the sport? I mean basketball. NBA centers are not exactly known for scoring or even rebounding a lot. They are in there to take up space, protect the rim, body up on big players in the block and provide toughness. Kwame actually does all these. The guys that do this and rebound OR block shots and maybe score get $14 million – e.g. Chandler.

That said, amnestying Bell was dumb, dumb, dumb. If AB or Lee do not improve this year, the team would have had the flexibility to get rid of a huge contract.

    playoffs here we come! (not)

Marcus, If the warriors are soooo serious about becoming a defensive team, why did they draft Klay who plays NO defense?

On the draft board, they left Markieff Morris who would have been a nice defensive compliment to D. Lee. They also left Alec Burke who everyone says is a serious defensive shooting gaurd?

“why did they draft Klay who plays NO defense?”

Exactly! Because it’s all BS. The most NBA teams don’t play defense and guys like Thompson are scorers. The Warriors already have scorers in Ellis and Curry. At this point I would offer up Curry in a deal for Chris Paul.

The Warriors have a defensive center in Brown. You don’t need to small guard who play the same type of game. The Hornets would jump all over Curry. Go get Paul!

With Kwame at center, the Warriors would do well to move Biedrins to power forward.

It coack Jackson is going defensive, he might have a good thing in Biedrins at PF because Biedrins can’t guard NBA centers, but he can guard NBA power forwards.

Leave the centers to Kwame and move Biedrins to PF.

  • Judge Wapner

    @Mike T-

Beans at PF? What are you smokin? The guy can’t shoot the basketball to save his life. Putting two seven footers on the floor who can’t shoot or handle the ball is a terrible idea. It will never happen.

And what do you do, bench David Lee? lol

I think the signing is OK.. I would have preferred they sign Kris Humphries.. he’s younger, can score a little better, and plays good D. Plus he’s an above average rebounder. But its only for one year; so I have no problem with the signing.

  • Niners in 2012

Kwame Brown gave up 0.94 points per possession in post, compared to 0.73 for Biedrins. Even David Lee was better.

Brown had his third-best Win Share season of his career last year..and still had a negative net Per

So much for basketball moneyball, these stats should have scared us away!
