What to Watch – Preseason Game 1

Monta Ellis on former coach Keith Smart: “The relationship we built was
more of a father and son.”

Tonight is a pretty important preseason game for the Warriors. So much to figure out. So many firsts. So many ducks to get in order. It will be Mark Jackson’s first time as a head coach in a game situation and the first time his staff works together. Since there are only two preseason games, they will have to analyze the key guys and how they are meshing, get a live look at the system (especially on defense) how well the players are grasping it, AND check out these training camp invites to see if anyone can make the team.

A lot will be going on tonight at Oracle Arena. Here’s a few things to keep your eyes on:

Warriors claim Ish Smith off Waivers

The Warriors’ bid for point guard Ish Smith was successful. Golden State claimed him off waivers Friday as it learned minutes ago they were awarded his rights.

Smith gives the Warriors a third point guard. He is little (6-feet, 175 pounds) and super fast. He’s averaged 10.3 minutes in 43 career games, most of them with Houston. He was waived by Memphis on Wednesday. The Warriors want Smith to help Stephen Curry. Chasing the speedy Smith around every day will be a challenge for Curry, one that figures to help him defensively.

Warriors Hoping to Land PG Ish Smith

I’m told the Warriors put their bid to claim point guard Ish Smith off waivers. , who was waived by Memphis on Wednesday. They found out this afternoon if they get him. If multiple teams try to claim him, he will go to the team with the worst record I think. Smith would be the third point guard on the roster.

Smith is little and super fast. Probably the fastest player in the league. He’s averaged 10.3 minutes in 43 career games, most of them with Houston. The Warriors don’t just want Smith for what he can do on the court (floor general, not a good shooter), but they like the idea of Stephen Curry defending him every day in practice. Trying to keep the speedy Smith in front of him would be helpful to Curry’s development on defense, the Warriors presume.
