After Missing On J.J. Hickson, the Warriors Settle on Mickell Gladness

A day after their attempt to sign big man J.J. Hickson was squashed, the Warriors signed free agent center Mickell Gladness to a 10-day contract.

A 6-foot-11, 220 pounder out of Alabama A&M, Gladness will be in uniform for tonight’s game against the host Houston Rockets.

Gladness appeared in eight games this season for the Miami Heat, totaling two points, 11 rebounds and a block in 28 minutes. He signed his second 10-day contract withMiamion Feb. 28. The Heat opted not to sign him for the remainder of the season.

A player is allowed to sign a maximum of two 10-day contracts with one team. After that, the team must sign him for the remainder of the season or waive him.

Prior to joining the Heat for their 2011-12 training camp, Gladness appeared in four games for the Dakota Wizards, the Warriors’ NBA Development League team. He averaged 7.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 20.8 minutes per contest.

Overall, Gladness – who went undrafted in 2009 – has appeared in 81 D-League games over three seasons, averaging 4.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks.

It will be interesting to see how much time Gladness gets. Golden State needs some help on the front line (since right now David Lee is the back-up center). With that said, it stands to reason rookie big Jeremy Tyler should be getting most of the minutes at center. He certainly should get more than Gladness.

But in his first career start, Tyler totaled just 15 minutes. Warriors coach Mark Jackson hasn’t hid the fact that winning is his priority. He can stamp that is Gladness gets 25 minutes tonight and Tyler gets 15. Of course, he should be prepared for the backlash. Because Warriors fans know more than anyone else that this is the time of year to see what the youngsters can do.

7′ and only 220? Why do those guys try to play in the NBA so underweight?.Eat a cheeseburger JJ.
And Klay is already operating in Monta level..27 points,4 rebounds 5 assists. I told you all-the line to take Monta’s job would have been miles long if we didnt have Klay.

  • Chris Mullin’s Barber

Unless he’s strictly on the team as another big body to use in practice. What’s the purpose of signing him?

Most of these guys never make the team, anyway. Unless of course your coach is Don Nelson.

  • Dan

Thing is Tyler’s minutes were really solid yesterday. Rebounding, blocking shots, even some post scoring and no major gaffes. The way he was playing more minutes would have helped the team win. So why did MJax not give him more run? Seems like he just doesn’t trust him regardless of what he might show.

IS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE A BAND AID FOR LARRY RILEY’S MISSTEP OF MISSING OUT ON JJ HICKSON??? I HAVEN’T STOPPED BOOING LARRY RILEY SINCE WAY BEFORE LACOB WAS BOOED THE OTHER DAY, BECAUSE IN MY OPINION, LARRY RILEY SHOULD BE BOOED, NOT LACOB, LARRY RILEY SHOULD BE THE ONE BOOED OFF THE TEAM ALONG WITH BIEDRINS AND DORRELL WRIGHT NOT TOO FAR BEHIND.
ONCE AGAIN, LARRY RILEY GAMBLED ON JJ HICKSON, JUST THE SAME WAY HE GAMBLED ON JEREMY LIN (FOR GHOST DEANDRE JORDAN). LACOB! DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE YOUR BOOS INTO CHEERS, FIRE LARRY RILEY!!! THAT WOULD DO IT FOR ME. MY QUESTION IS, HOW MUCH IS THIS NEW GUY MICKEL GLADNESS BETTER OFF THAN EARL BARRON?

  • Mike

Tyler looked surprisingly solid in the first half, albeit a little lost, but overall played well. The 2nd half he just looked ok but, I was surprised he didn’t get in a 2nd 3-4 minute stretch early 4th. Not at all surprised he wasn’t on the court crunch time.

  • Boris

Why Biedrins is not playing again? Has his girlfriend said not to or got injury on bench? His story should be written in basket’s text books as example how to climb high and fall very far down.

  • Bobby G

    @ Wil,

Dude, can’t even read your post because it’s in all caps.

  • wil

GLADNESS, YOU BETTER BRING IT TONIGHT, THIS MAY BE THE CHANCE OF YOUR LIFETIME, PROVE US ALL WRONG, AND PLAY AS IF IT WAS YOUR LAST GAME OF YOUR LIFE!!!
DORRELL WRIGHT, YOU’VE BECOME EXPANDABLE FROM EVEN BEFORE JEFFERSON ARRIVED, YOUR PLAYING THIS YEAR HAS SENT US A MESSAGE YOU DON’T WANT TO BE HERE, I KNOW YOUR HEART IS STILL WITH THE HEAT, FOR YOUR SAKE, WHEN YOU DRIVE IN, STOP PASSING THE BALL AND STOP MAKING THOSE STUPID LITTLE MISTAKES THAT ALLOWS OTHER TEAMS TO MAKE A RUN ON US, YOU ARE NOT A PLAYMAKER, WHEN YOU DRIVE IN, DRIVE IN TO SCORE.
ANDRIS BIEDRINS, CAN YOU PLEASE KEEP PLAYING SICK THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE YEAR??!! WE NEED YOU BIEDRINS AS A CHEERLEADER. AND IF WHENEVER THEY PUT YOU TO PLAY, DO ME A FAVOR, BECOME SELFISH AND DON’T PASS THE BALL, DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE FOULED, AND EVERYTIME YOU GET THE BALL TAKE IT TO THE HOOP. AND TO THE REST OF THE TEAM, KEEP DOING WHAT YOU’RE DOING BABY, BECAUSE THE WARRIORS ARE ALREADY A POWERHOUSE TO BE RECKON WITH!!!

  • wil

@ BOBBY, I DID IT IN CAPS, BECAUSE I KNEW YOU COULDN’T READ, LOL

  • Niners in 2012

It will get swept under the rug but the Warriors totally BLEW IT on JJ Hickson. It’s amazing they thought an athletic PF(younger than Udoh) could fall thru waivers. What are they thinking? I support the Bogut trade and all but honestly trading for Bogut has been the only thing they’ve done right so far. Everything else they’ve done this year has backfired.

  • Young

Worst part is Lacob still hasnt learned…Even posted being boed

He was on KNBR on tuesday saying the warriors are should be able to sign someone to help them win games THIS year. I was like wow, we MUST be getting JJ Hickson. Thats the only one he could be referring to.

Now Madness is announced (Gladness) and im like huh?

Lacob needs to stop promising us the world when he really doesnt know.

I would like this bogut deal (minus udoh) if he didnt compare it to Kevin Garnett…Bogut is good but nothing like kg

  • Young

Sorry for all the negative posts…

I’ll be back around draft time…this hurts too much

  • Martina

@ Wil — have Chris Cohan fix that CAPS LOCK problem

  • get a clue

do you realize that the Warriors COULD NOT OFFER a contract to Hickson due to league rules? That is why they had to see if he would clear waivers. so many dumb Warrior fans.

  • Derek

Gladness ? What is it with Riley and tall frail guys. Another garbage pick-up. Riley is a total moron with no clue what-so-ever.

Jackson needs to loosen up and let Tyler and Wright the rookie get some significant run. Right is athletic and strong, let him play alittle back-up power foward since they do not have one. Tyler should get the starting job since he’s already offensively better than Biedrens.

  • abomination

Hey he’s just a young kid off the street, and already he’s probably more advanced than Beans, so give the kid a chance. Guy blocked 6 shots a game as a soph in college playing at 200 lbs. He’s 220 now, maybe they can pack another 20 lbs on him and make a player out of him. I’ll take him over beans any day of the week

  • deano

It’s better to keep Lee at PF and play the beanpoles at C. Tyler, CWright and Gladness cannot quibble about where they are played; and if they are ineffective, let them be ieffective at C and let Lee be as effective as he can at PF. We win if we win, and we win if we lose.

  • Niners in 2012

Get a Clue needs to GET A CLUE. We had a trade exception from the Bogut trade and we could have claimed Hickson off waivers. I wish the beat writers would catch on to this terrible mistake by the front office.

  • uweblab

Gladness goes from MIAMI to the Warriors? Talk about penthouse to outhouse…

  • Jet_BlackBeard

@18 I’m curious to learn how you can use the “trade” exception in the waiver process. I looked over http://www.cbafaq.com and could not find any indication that you can use the exception in anything other than a trade. Perhaps there is a link you can send to educate the rest of us.

  • Stan

    Monta-his biggest game as a Buck,home crowd,vs Boston…and Monta was invisible.
What we saw here for years.

  • Next Season

@Niners in 2012 – might want to read point 20 of your boy larry coon’s guide. exceptions put the team OVER the cap. https://webfiles.uci.edu/lcoon/cbafaq/salarycap.htm#Q20

  • Stan

Also-Keith Smart sinking like a rock in Sacratomato. Steeped in losing..Keith’s bad luck to learn from the old Don Nelson.
I had it all set up for Lacob that first year-hire Sloan as coach and or GM,or get Bennet to to coach OR I even put out there if Lacob insisted on a temp..Jim Barnett.
Would have got this team right..

  • marquee jackson

Who?????? Save your $$$$ you DS.

  • Niners in 2012

You guys know Portland is WAY over the cap, right? So how did they claim JJ Hickson? Answer: They had a trade exception from the Marcus Camby trade.

What are waivers? Everything you need to know right here.

  • Jet_BlackBeard

@25 Thanks for the link. That’s exactly the info I was looking for.

  • Next Season

@25. wow that’s just way too confusing. thanks for the link. question – b/c i’m too lazy to look it up – how does brandon roy retiring affect portland’s cap situation? maybe there was another (non cap reason) for gs to make a claim.

  • Dan the Man

The W’s need to get rid of Gladness. Give all this time to develop J.Tyler. He is young and strong and has potential. Like i said Give him the time they were giving Udoh. Maybe he is the next spark of the bench. Get Rid of Riley, D.Wright and Biedrins. They can only bring you back. Also get rid of your 1st round and Second round draft picks. This team is young as it it. Bring in Talent not futurte potential. We have been developing and rebuilding for quiet some time now. Its time to win.

  • thewarriorsrule

Marcus, i am confused, so can you please clarify on this to everyone if the warriors goofed up on acquiring hickson??
