Kirk Lacob Promoted to Assistant General Manager

The Warriors announced Monday the team has promoted Kirk Lacob, son of co-owner Joe Lacob, to assistant general manager.

Lacob, formerly the director of basketball operations, will answer to general manager Bob Myers. The Warriors’ front office had a vacancy when Myers was promoted to general manager last month and former general manager Larry Riley was re-assigned as director of scouting. That left one fewer person in the brain trust. Myers said it was unlikely he would look outside the organization to fill the hole, making Kirk Lacob the natural fill.

Lacob has spent the last two seasons juggling a few hats — including, player personnel evaluation, draft preparation and scouting, and even advanced statistics and analysis. In August 2011, he was named general manager of the Dakota Wizards, the NBA Development League franchise the Warriors purchased, and Lacob had been overseeing the potential move to Santa Cruz.

I’m sure his stint in the D league really prepared him for the big time, just like it does most of the players who make that jump…

    I wish my dad owned a team…

  • noma_pride

Sam Presti was 30 when the Sonics/Thunder hired him…but he also spent 7 years as a scout/salary cap guru with the Spurs. Congrats to ~25yr old Kirk, but damn it’s hard to imagine he’s learned enough to warrant this kind of promotion and be an asset to Bob Myers.

Nepotism is alive and well in Warrior land. Daddy honestly couldn’t find a more deserving candidate. I’ve been impressed with ownership thus far, but this move doesn’t pass the smell test

  • Jled

So much for making your own way. I like what this ownership group is doing, but come on man, this kid did not earn it. Let’s hoe he’s cut from the same cloth as Jed York.

  • warrior fan

I guess after the out of court settlement for alleged involvement (sexual harassment of some Warrior girls)Dad figured his boy was due for a promotion.

  • Joe

And they wonder why we boo then laugh. What a fricking joke. In no way qualified. Disgraceful and an insult to actually qualified candidates. No management team can take this seriously. The curse continues.

  • KG

This is a joke, and just shows how ridiculous and arrogant Lacob is.

Here is the ideal draft situation for the Warriors this year:

    #7- Perry Jones, 6’11, 237, SF/PF, Baylor
    #30- Jeffrey TaYlor, 6’7, 225 SG,SF, Vanderbilt

    Imagine. 5- Bogut, 4- Lee, 3- Jones, 2- Klay, 1-Curry

Jones will be better than Randolph and Udoh, plus there is no Nellie around to ruin the development of a young tall athletic SF/PF with upside.

    thumbs down

Enh, my guess his real title is “Daddy’s special little basketball guy.” I assume there is a cool little plaque with that written on it above his super-rad, race car bed where he gets tucked in and read his bedtime stories everynight.

Agree with posts 1-4. It does not put the team in a good light to say the least.

  • Yoda

So much for paying your dues. I just hope the title is overblown and the responsibilities are in Santa Cruz or wherever the D-Leaguers end up.

We have Jerry West, only the great GM of all time, on the payroll, but we promote the boss’ kid instead.

I have been a lifelong Warrior fan, and Cohan’s ownership nearly ruined it for me. I don’t know if I can take another bad owner. I’m ready for someone to move a team to San Jose and for me to jump ship.

There is NO team run as bad as us. You can point to the Clippers or the Bobcats, but the Clippers are winning now that they pulled off the CP3 trade, and the Bobcats have hope since they’re probably going to win the Davis sweepstakes in the draft. We’re don’t have winning or hope. Just the owner’s kid in charge.

  • Stan

He was part of “The player personnel evaluation?” As in letting Jeremy Lin just walk away..not even for magic beans and a mule?

  • Stan

Kobe said “Heads should roll”..instead, like the typical American CEO would do-Lacob promoted everybody!. We went from bad seasons to a terrible one…And more money for all!..eh,I could go on..but won’t. Too sickening.

If W’s draft Perry Jones, this is how the lineup woud look like potentially:

    C- Bogut
    PF- Lee
    SF- Jones
    SG- Klay
    PG- Curry

Wright can come off the bench.

W’s won’t have to worry about length problems anymore either.

    DKnight,

We said that after the B. Wright and A. Randolph drafts too…lol…the only concern I keep hearing about that guy is about his motor, that might be a problem Jackson can actually help with though.

Breakdown of Lacob and Capital D among others…

If I riskded and put up millions for a team and felt my son could do the job to help my investment, I too would hire him. Just because he is his son does not say he is all that bad. Good example…Jed York.

  • bergie101

Yes he’s the bosses son but that doesn’t mean he is doomed to fail in the ass’t GM spot. He’s a Stanford grad and has lots of good mentors to learn from. Right- he would never have this job without his father. Don’t we all think we could do this as well as young Lacob. In any case he won’t be the final decision maker on draft day, free agents and trades.

    ^^^^^^^^
Yeah, but look who was coaching Wright and Randolph.

Nellie couldn’t develop an athletic big man into a legit all around player if his life depended on it.

It will be a sad day if the Warriors move to SF??

What a joke Lacob is becoming.

  • Harp’s Dubs

Perry Jones is NOT the answer at small forward. In fact, the only SF in the top of the draft that will start is Kidd-Gilchrist. With that said, I still hope we move our pick, Curry and Biedrins to Boston for Rondo, if Boston will do it.
Here’s a doozy of a trade that no one’s thrown out there and I understand why, but how about our pick, Biedrins and Jefferson (both horrible contracts) to Atlanta for Joe Johnson and his massive contract? I believe the Hawks might do it to break up their not-advcancing-past-the-first-round core of players, shed the length of Johnson’s contract and get a top-7 talent in the draft to play alongside Teague, Williams, Smith and Horford.
Granted, we get an aging Joe Johnson, on the downside of his career, but clearly with a few good years left and WAAAAY more valuable than Biedrins and Jefferson.
A starting line-up of Curry, Thompson, Johnson, Lee and Bogut is pretty damn good (if healthy). And that’s a big IF.

  • http://trappedingoldenstate.blogspot.com/ Trapped in Golden State

Great proposal Harp…only problem is the lack of flexibility when Curry’s deal is up (even though i hope we don’t overpay him)

The years on that deal are hard to swallow but for the first two years its a major upgrade…I’d like to get get Jerry West’s candid take on that but I think I already know it, he values cap space in a major way…I’d move Curry and the pick plus cap filler for Rondo in a HEARTBEAT!

  • Stan

And Lacob’s son is all of 22?..C’mon Joe,your better then that,
    Signed,
    Fitz.

Most recent Warrior draft screw ups.

Not drafting Greg Monroe ahead of Udoh was a screw up, because it would have solved their big man problem and chances area, Monte may have been kept.

This W’s draft history has been absolutely terrible.
