Maccabi Tel Aviv coach David Blatt confirms meeting with Warriors’ Steve Kerr regarding assistant job

Warriors coach Steve Kerr met with decorated Maccabi Tel Aviv coach David Blatt last week regarding a top assistant coaching job, Blatt confirmed to the Jerusalem Post on Sunday.

Blatt and Kerr spoke for about 45 minutes at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday, according to the paper. Yahoo Sports first reported Kerr’s meeting with Blatt, a Massachusetts native and Israeli who uses elements of the offense he learned while playing for Princeton.

Kerr, who has said he would like to have one or two experienced head coaches on his staff, could face competition for landing the 55-year-old Blatt. The Associated Press reported Cleveland contacted Blatt regarding its head coaching vacancy, and Minnesota appears to be interested in him as an assistant coach.

“It is true that I have had conversations with teams from both sides of the Atlantic because my contract is about to end and it is only natural that I will receive information before that happens,” Blatt told the Jerusalem Post.

“You can’t coach a big team like Maccabi Tel Aviv and achieve what we have achieved without someone noticing. I’m not as interested in everything that is being talked about as much as you think. I haven’t received any offers at the moment. There have been talks but my goal at the moment is to win the Israeli championship and we’ll see what happens after that.”

Blatt led Maccabi to the Euroleague championship this year and has also coached in Greece, Italy, Russia  and Turkey. He led Russia to a bronze-medal finish at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.

“He’s done an unbelievable job overseas,” new Timberwolves head coach Flip Saunders told KFAN Sports Radio on Friday. “He’s done a great job, and his biggest question is, does he want to make the jump back here? Does he think he can get a head job from over there, or does he have to go and become an assistant? So that’s a decision he’ll have to make.

“I believe he’s got a good basketball mind. He’s got a good offense. He’s been able to help teams overachieve.”

Mike Tannenbaum, the agent for both Blatt and Kerr, did not return messages seeking comment.

The Warriors have a great P.R. staff or person. No cared much about the assistant coaches before. Now it gets a headline. For example, who was the top assistant coaches for last ten Warrior coaches – Jackson, Smart, Nelson, Montgomery, Musselman, Cowens, Winters, Carlisimo, St. Jean, and Adelman?
