Warriors PG Stephen Curry Sets Single-Season 3-Point Record

After the game, an emphatic fist pump, Warriors point guard Stephen Curry — as he does after he hits a 3-pointer — patted his heart twice and pointed to the heavens. The record was his.

He knocked down his second 3-pointer of the night at the 6:49 mark of the second quarter. That put him at 270 3-pointers for 2012-13, the most ever in a season. The previous mark was 269, set by then-Seattle guard Ray Allen in 2005-06.

CURRY: “I was nervous, to be honest with you. I had butterflies. It was like the elephant in the room. That first shot I took was a heat check, just to see what was going on tonight. After that, it was trying not to press, just let it come. But it was hard to keep it out of my head. It was a big relief when that last one went in.”

It was looking suspect for a while. But eventually, point guard Stephen Curry took over and the Warriors put away San Antonio’s second string.

Curry finished with 35 points on 13 of 23 shooting (including 7 3-pointers). He knocked down 6 3-pointers in the second half, sending Oracle into a frenzy, chanting “Cur-ry! Cur-ry! Cur-ry!” Eventually, the Warriors put away the Spurs, who played without Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Kawhi Leonard and Boris Diaw.

Stephen Curry 9 Threes From NBA History

Just a couple days ago, Stephen Curry’s chances at setting the single-season record for 3-pointers in a season were looking bleak.

But after Friday’s game, when he hit nine 3-pointers, Curry has made 261 3-pointers and is back in reasonable range of the record. He needs to make nine in two games to break Allen’s mark of 269, set with the Seattle SuperSonics in 2005-06.

CURRY: I know about it. I’m not trying to let it affect or change the way I play. Obviously shooting threes is a strength of mine. If I have a good look I’m going to shoot it, like I have been all season.”

Stephen Curry Becomes Youngest Player Ever to Hit 250 3-Pointers in a Season

This TNT graphic puts into perspective Stephen Curry’s 3-point prowess.

He entered tonight having played 254 games and made 621 3-pointers. That’s 214 more than Ray Allen did through the same number of games, 299 more than Reggie Miller hit.

Curry entered tonight’s game against Oklahoma City averaging 2.44 3-pointers per game for his career. That rate is higher than the career rate of Ray Allen (2.33) and Reggie Miller (1.84).

Curry, who turned 25 last month, made a bit of history Thursday night. He knocked down two 3-pointers in the first half. That puts him at 251 for the season. He’s now the youngest player ever to make 250 3-pointers in a season (previously Dennis Scott at 27).
