We wrote back in February about the new LED marquee being installed outside the Civic Center Plaza in Richmond and after some delays it looks like the new message board might be almost ready for showtime.
The new fixture is in place and the wiring connections were being made this week.
The new installation replaces the vintage “analog” sign (letters placed by hand) that had more style as a fixture, but less potential information to offer.
Delays were at least partly due to having to relocate the electrical connections.
The city wants the auditorium to regain its popularity as an event venue, which once drew B.B. King, James Brown, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., boxing, roller derby and other events as attractions.
UPDATE: According to the May 27 report from the City Manager’s Office, the sign is expected to up-and-running in two weeks.
