RICHMOND, Calif… The RYSE Youth Center will be celebrating five years of youth empowerment and community service by hosting its 2nd Annual Winter Wonderland Community Event.

RYSE’s Winter Wonderland, a free community event, will include a toy giveaway for newborns and kids up to 12 years old, music, arts and crafts activities, tree decorating and more! The purpose of this event is to bring communities together, support youth and their families in celebrating the holiday season, and honor RYSE’s fiveyear anniversary and commitment to serving young people in the community.

The Center opened its doors to the community on October 18, 2008 after a string of youthrelated homicides near Richmond High School in 2000 mobilized students to take action to address the violence and lack of safety at school and in the community. Students organized vigils and community forums with more than 1,500 youth and community members, and met and worked with local officials and stakeholders on a comprehensive assessment of youthidentified priorities and solutions.

Richmond’s RYSE youth center celebrates

(by Robert Rogers)

RICHMOND — Four years ago, the RYSE Center was just taking shape

Today, it’s one of the city’s proudest success stories.

And it keeps adding new chapters.

“This community knew that young people could lead a center and develop the programming and have adult allies to help make it work,” said County Supervisor John Gioia, one of the founders of the Macdonald Ave. youth center. “And that’s what’s great about this center. It’s an alliance between adults and youths, but the youths lead the effort.”

On Dec. 8 hundreds gathered to celebrate the 4th anniversary of the RYSE Youth Center with s ribbon cutting for the opening of an outdoor stage, gardens, and basketball court.

In addition to the grand opening of the RYSE Outside’s project, the youth center distributed hundreds of toys to Richmond families.

The new outdoor area was funded mostly by the Bechtel and Lesher Foundations, to the tune of more than $200,000.

The Dean & Margaret Lesher Foundation, established in 1989 and named for the founder of the Contra Costa Times, grants hundreds of thousands annually for community improvement and educational scholarships in Contra Costa County.

“Dean would be thrilled to see this,” said Lesher Foundation Executive Director Kathleen Odne, gesturing toward the outdoor ampitheater and dozens of children. “We are ongoing supporters of RYSE programming.”

RYSE Center thanks supporters, urges more for kids this Christmas

From staff at the RYSE Center:

Hello Friends and Family,

First off, I would like to thank all of you who have donated money and/or toys for the RYSE toy drive. Your generosity is much appreciated. For those of you who may want to make a contribution, there is still time before Thursday to drop off toys or make an online donation that we will use to purchase toys (http://www.rysecenter.org/support-ryse/). Be sure to write “richmondtoys” in the PO box field.

Secondly, I would like to invite you all to attend our Winter Wonderland event this Saturday, December 8th from 2pm – 5pm. This should be a really fun event and a great opportunity for those of you who have not had a chance to make it out to RYSE to come check it out. Plus, it’s totally family friendly so you can bring all the little ones with you!

Hope to see you there!

Happy Holidays,
Dan
